How can you clean up backlinks?

As most of us have already heard by now....Google rolled out an update over the last few days and it has penalized quite a few sites. What isn't clear is how they have determined why certain sites have suffered and others haven't.

A lot of people are saying "you need to clean up those backlinks" - basically my question is, how? I've searched on Google and there are monthly subscription services that can help - although is there method just finding the links and sending the web owner an email?

How can you remove links that you have no control over? And, IF (I'm not saying they are) SAPE links have been targeted...then surely these BH techniques or web owners aren't going to bother to find your links and remove them from those servers?

I won't suggest that...

1) If you don't have all the information you could ruin your website.. by submitting a link from a domain where you already have a valuable link.
2) Try to keep this thing as private as you can... G is not your friend.... Is like you try to stole from some one house and then you ask him to come and make a deposition that you didn't stole from his neighbors.

Don't cleanup your links, just start new website then do 301 redirects from your old site to the new one

Lot of "payday loans" site do this method

There are some services out there that offer to remove your unwanted backlinks. Not cheap (and not sure it works). You can google them.

Get Google disavow and learn how to use it. You can even hire me to do the job for you..

Google Disavow tool will do the trick but it can be dangerous when you do not know how to use it properly.

Thought, only Google Disavow won't help, you also need to fill an reconsideration request!

I haven't read a case yet, where one got out of a manual penalty, without using the combination with the reconsideration.

You may also write a note to most of the links, what's wrong with it. Also, you might get turned over on the first request, you maybe need so send 3-4

But when everything is cleaned up, after 2-3~ your rankings should come back, with the power of what is left.
