Yes, there is. [...] The safety net can and should be private & voluntary based.
It's becoming rly entertaining stretching to comic depending on the paragraph you're reading. The topic is so complex that ppl way smarter than folks on this board of any faith and philosophical creed around the world have been busy fine tuning the proper theories/laws/regulations since the industrial revolution. And from a lot of different angles.
The idea of work (and all related concepts) keeps changing as the philosophical and practical implications of work change: for instance the "automation" at large right now (read paper news every once in a while) and relatively to the growth outlook of it is something that for the first time had to be taken seriously into account and needed to be reckoned as a threat to the paradigms of the past. Why "a threat"? Because nobody knows if there's a way out this time. In other words it's not necessarily guaranteed that the technological advancements in some fields will NECESSARILY have positive consequences (as some simpler minds seem to always imply, god only knows why) at this stage, and nobody knows if in the future there will be a reason to put ppl at work in a lot of areas that employ thousands of workers instead of, hmm let's say AI machines..
Of course there have been (qualitative) examples of this phenomenon even in the past, but the magnitude (quantitative) of changes is expected to reshape the world of work as we've known it in unprecedented ways.

So this thread could have been summed up as
"Folks don't be lazy and get some fucking shit done", like OP mostly does and that's great. Doesn't cover all the individual, peculiar cases, but it's simply a "best practice" we all can agree on, right? That would have been appropriate and very true. But a little bit of propaganda (commie style to prove the opposite of commie) had to slip thru, where would the fun be otherwise?
Every time, every few fuckin posts regarding anything remotely related to economics/politics, the same mumbo jumbo comes up with supposedly "obvious motivations" implied to keep the evil Govt at bay, sell everything to private entities and all that usual over-simplistic nonsense.
HAHA, all I have to say.
But at least one thing on BHW is clear. Hundreds of thousands of ppl that ACTUALLY RUN and advise and take INFORMED decisions (BHW posting ain't there yet

) on how to run hundreds of governments around the world are ALL wrong, ALL have a secret agenda, ALL didn't and still don't see these "obvious" motivations, right? Lol Equally clear how a few of the oversimplistic Austrian BS theories by ppl with a lot of time in their hands should be the cure of it all, right? Lol
And of course gotta wait for "what everybody thinks is not always right" counterargument to prove some "economic religion" is better without ANY practical demonstration and even a lackluster theoretical foundation, but you know, ONLY some very smart individuals know the Truth!!! haha Because they understood but other mere mortals can't, who doesn't want a cup of dogma every once in a while, uh?

Etc etc etc.
And NO no single example will ever serve as a "catch all" demonstration for shit, so the point of the poster that tells her story doesn't demolish anything. It's HER experience, period. The objection "you find something to do anyways to survive" doesn't even need a comment dumb as it is (or see-how-tough-i-am-all-do-like-me): it just brings back memories of the "glorious" Middle Ages. Polishing the skills in the logical dept would help sometimes, because a bit of this rhetorical expedience slips in there EVERY single time.
But let's go on with the show: it's fun and games and only one piece of reasonable advice: this comment ain't there to justify your lazy ass so YES, learn, execute and just go get some work done, folks
