While looking at the inbound links to my site and I have noticed that the number of linking root domains to my site is different in the root domain that it is in the w w w sub domain? I hope my terminology is correct. My question is: for best SEO results which one should I focus my backlinks on... the one with or the one without the w w w out in front? Is there a way to make them both share the "SEO links"? Right now I have the w w w site doing a 302 redirect to the non w w w one ...but I am not sure if this is the best...and defiantly don't want to start on the wrong foot. A little help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!

You have to make a 301 redirection from root to www or from www to root. It's the same in my opinion but the redirection is very important for SEO.

I have a 302 redirect right now between the two... I will change it to a 301 but just want to double check which one should get the "priority" and going forward when i tell people to backlink to my site what do I tell them to use the www one or the one without the www in front. thanks!

With or without doesn't make a difference in terms of SEO. You should however try to keep your back links consistent on the one you decide to use.

what is the common practice the www 301ing to the nonwww or is it the nonwww 301ing to the www? thanks

you can use with www or without www its not a much of difference

Good question.. If you use WordPress you will notice that the default is a non www.. The best practice for link building is to build links to the redirected one, i.e, if www is being redirected to a non www one -- then build link without using the www.. build links the other way if it is the other way around.

For back linking I use non WWW link. I don't know why but i have never got any kind of problem. But I think all of them are just same. you can use both version to create links.
