College project: What can save yahoo and myspace ?

Yahoo has to merge with facbook. The two are a perfect match. Myspace had its day, but yahoo is far from done. I like yahoo just beacuse what yahoo news brings. They used to have real journalist that worked in thad department, its not as good as it used to be. If you yahoo really got better at reporting the news, unlike google that just syndicates it. Heres is a thought, yahoo produces good quality news, when you click on the news report the reporter gets paid. Better reporters, and better newsmaking creates more clicks and the independant reporter gets paid. They might have this, not sure.

Ya yahoo news is great but is there something new that yahoo can create to bounce back like apple did with ipod ? Instead of merging with facebook what if yahoo creates its own social networking site ? I mean all we need for the project is to come up with a new idea. It doesn't matter if its a good or bad idea as long as i can present it to my professor :)

Seems like a bad idea. Yahoo has no unique selling point for a social network, and there is pretty strong competition already with Facebook (and G+). I don't think Yahoo has the capacity to match either of them as you need a very big following to be able to get a social network like that off the ground. Maybe there is a way to make social networks work with Yahoo but you need an idea bigger than "do a social network".

Yahoo needs to get into areas where it can innovate and not do copycat "me too" products.

Simplicity and "dumbing down" might be a good start? Off the top of my head as a user the two things that google and facebook brought to the table was simplicity and ease. Though google and yahoo offer the same services, im much more prone to use google because it gets right to the point on the home page. Where as Yahoo, I feel bombarded with ads and 3,000 different links to click on. Same thing with facebook vs myspace. I havn't even looked at myspace in over three years because of how complicated it has gotten. Granted facebook is increasingly becoming more complicated everyday, however, it's still very easy to navigate and look at.

Hope that helps?

When you talk about Apple doing a turn around you also have to remember one thing - they were sitting on billions of dollars in cash. They could have scrapped their entire business plan and converted to an entirely different industry.

Without cash it gets a lot harder.

Gotta say redrubles, I disagree with the importance you place on textbook marketing when it comes to the internet.

In the context of the arguement at hand, comparing Kays Jewelry to the popularity of a website is flawed. It feels to me that you have a good understanding of marketing in general, but you do not have a firm understanding of what seperates the internet from anything and everything else. The spirit of the internet so it were.

I would argue the success of a website is driven by the quality of the service/site offered, not marketing. The only thing that could "save" Yahoo or Myspace is if they do something better than their competition.

I disagree. This is from The Wall Street Journal's MarketWatch. http://articles.marketwatch.com/201...731413_1_yahoo-ceo-yahoo-home-page-steve-jobs I am more of this mindset. "2) After getting Yahoo focused on its core strengths, unleash a marketing campaign to tell consumers and partners about them. For years, each new Yahoo CEO has had a muddled answer to what Yahoo really is. If Mayer can determine how to truly enunciate Yahoo?s mission, she might want to develop an ad campaign that would resonate with consumers, much like Apple?s ?Think Different? ads told people what Apple was all about, without showing a single product."

I understand your viewpoint, and do agree that marketing is useful to an extent, but more so with consumer products, and less so on website brands offering services such as Yahoo.

The element that separates Apple from Yahoo!, is that Apple's business is centered around consumer products. As it stands now, on face value the Yahoo empire is a focused on providing a service(news, email). It's an entirely different ballgame, of which the rules are constantly being defined and reworked. There's little customer loyalty in the internet game - people will migrate to whatever site is the quickest and most useful.

I do however agree that Yahoo perhaps needs to create a more decisive identity as it were.

It 's not marketing that makes sustainable success. First you need to be able to provide a service/product that users would kill for. And that 's the hard part, so I think your assignment is utterly off-base. Hopefully, you are not paying for that class.

I disagree. Marketing is for shitty products. Just look at apple. They sell computers like the Macbook air with no cd rom drive for almost double what a faster PC would sell for. Those cute commercials capture the dumb.... that's what marketing is all about.

That's my whole point. You can sell people anything with exceptional marketing strategies and an aggressive media blitz. I'm not saying I agree with it. I'm just saying what is.

You can sell shitty products, but you cannot sell free to use websites. Functionality over marketing.

For a website to truely succeed, it must offer more than the current champion, as it were.

For Myspace-Start out by going back to it's roots, which was music. Create something that would allow people to put in the genres that they like best, and notifications go to the phone or email when an artist in that genre comes out with a song. They can have an excerpt from the song that people can listen to. There are so many good indie artists who never make the break into radio, and there is a lot of garbage on the radio because record companies push it down the public's throats. This would be a way for the people to discover the new music as opposed to record companies doing it for us. Myspace can also make the song available for purchase right there, and they get a commission. They can then make a deal with the artist that if x number of songs are sold, the artist has to agree to having their next single debut first on Myspace. I am a music lover and it would be great to have this available at my fingertips. I don't have the time or patience to fish through the new music of indie artists. The music would come to me, and it wouldn't take more than ten minutes to listen to all the excerpts in the genres that I like best.

According to my opinion this is the best idea among the 50 replies that this thread has got so far :) What do you think guys ? If i am wrong then please quote a better idea than this one. I have to come up with an idea by tomorrow and if you have any better ideas please post them here.

By the way other ideas were also great where some said they need to merge with facebook and they need to make it simple and more easier to use and stick with yahoo news and some services in which they are good at. But my professor is looking for a new service. So he is against merging with another company and sticking with the same service in which they are good at:)

Feel free to vote for a reply which you think is the best and also please post some new ideas. Thanks :)

I think you're just fishing for the "next big thing" good idea under the pretext that this is a college project. Good man.

The Professor needs to think about something much more important, which is Ginger vs. Mary Ann. Or both, maybe.

The whole thing sounds quite grandiose, and quite false. This whole notion that "The Professor" says this or that. Any professor worth the ink on his diploma from the Urban School of Ghetto Marketing Studies ought to be able to appreciate the value of "MySpace" brand chocolate truffles with genuine dill pickle cream centers, sold only on Yahoo.com.

That's how I'd do it too... but it rarely turns out useful. Neither myspace nor fb, yahoo, apple were the first to offer whatever made them huge. Rather it was mostly luck in taking the right decisions at the right time. E.g. apple tried to dominate with a lot of crappy products before the ipod succeeded

But I didn't mean to digress. So, the thing that could save those 2 is a dislike button. People love to hate and to tell it to the whole world too. Not that the world cares but we like to pretend that it does.

There are such platforms already but they are not interesting since too small & irrelevant. Users pretend to use huge sites to spill their zealous hatred. Just look at the thousands of comments written hourly on every insignificant political or social
news on yahoo. And serious political websites are forced to live off adsense runoff.

Why would i do that ? This is a college project and i am pretty sure that if anyone had taken any marketing class then they might have received similar projects too. By the way yahoo and myspace were only part of the list of companies that we have to choose from. And since members here in bhw are more familiar with online marketing i decided to get some help for yahoo and myspace :)

And apparently Yahoo's new CEO agrees with me:

Indeed not, and Mayer has been up to much more serious business, said several sources, most especially pushing product innovation as the savior for Yahoo to anyone who will listen.
"This is the sound of Yahoo becoming a technology company again," said one source. "It will be all about platforms and products."

Well, it's 6 months later, I just re-read this entire thread and Google is still my home page, Gmail is still my primary email, Chrome is my browser. Only now I've got Gdrive installed, I have a GoogeDocs account and Google has an all-time high of the search market share of 66.9%.

Hay OP, are you still trying to sell chocolate and pickle sandwiches? They got all sorts of cooking-related reality TV shows now. They got shows about baking, and cooking, and cupcakes and candy and who's the best "Iron Chef". Pretty soon, their going to do an episode where the "Hill Billy Handfishin" retards bring some gen-u-ine hand-caught catfish to Bobby Flay while he makes a guest appearance on "Sweet Genius" and the creepy German dentist guy is going to make him turn that catfish into candy.

Maybe you can get representatives from Yahoo and FuckYouSpace to show up with some pickles and some chocolate. Valentine's Day is coming, so the timing will be perfect. We can resurrect both of these two corporations with a good dark chocolate and dill pickle meringue pie, yum YUM!

See, there's no problem in the world that can't be solved by marketing. You just got to want it bad enough, and never quit. Never give up. Never say die. Just keep going until the goal is achieved, and other highly effective self-motivational habits of the chronically deluded and retarded.
