Hi guys i am working on a project for my marketing class and i need help from you to create a marketing plan for yahoo and myspace. Since yahoo and myspace are almost dead i need to come up with a different method or service that can save them. For example Apple was almost dead and they came up with an ipod, iphone etc which turned out to be very successful. So is there anything that yahoo and myspace can do to become successful once again ? What can they do to become successful ? Please share some of your ideas and it will be really helpful for my project. Thank you so much.

Hmm not sure, I do know that the two founders of Google went to Yahoo with their new search algorithm stating it was better than what Yahoo was using at that current time. Yahoo dismissed them, and they went on to form the start-up Google.

Lol now yahoo is facing their consequences. If yahoo had listened to the google founders they would have been dominant now.

Yahoo is nowhere near dead. Sure, their market cap has dropped quite a bit, but Yahoo really diversified themselves in a HUGE way. The key for Yahoo to grow though is to keep expanding, I'm not sure what they are spending all of their money on, but if they need to cut some people, then so be it.

Myspace might be beyond saving at this point.

Both can be saved if they take the right paths. Seriously Myspace is not that bad, if you think about it they have a e-mail list of the worlds current consumers, think about it.

u know how every single blog and news site has a facebook like button and comment section...myspace has none of that, i never understood why not.

pay ashton kutcher / lady gaga to make a myspace page and make exclusive posts on that site so people will join

only ctrl+s can save them :)

it's not just the Yahoo Search
Yahoo was the biggest email provider once, now it's only the third, even Hotmail is bigger and Gmail is the largest with 425M users
Yahoo started its webmail in 1997, Google started its email service in 2004 which was an invite only beta until 2007...

the linked article above has a valid point though, Yahoo still have areas where they're strong and these are: News, Sports and Finance, they should concentrate on these

Exactly ! But i am looking for that right path. Can you come up with any ideas ?

Ya i agree ! But is there anything else that they can create to be successful ? Can they create a social networking site (I know its a bad idea ) that can beat facebook :) ? I mean can you think of any new service or product that they can offer ?

I love how your getting members to complete your assignment, definately using Blackhat methods, good job :)

They can buy ads on Facebook and Google Adwords to have more visitors :)
Or they can also rank high on Google and start a social Media campaign on Facebook

I think if myspace wanted to make a comeback, they should do something innovative with mobile.

Yahoo! = Jack of all traders, master of none.

They need to pick a strong point, and focus on that. Or perhaps focus on emerging services whilst retaining a prescence in their traditional role (news etc).

How have they allowed services like Skype and GMail to grow, when they've had all these things for years! (Messenger)

Yahoo! always gets overtaken despite being generally good at what they do. Be interesting to see if this changes with the new boss.

For Myspace-Start out by going back to it's roots, which was music. Create something that would allow people to put in the genres that they like best, and notifications go to the phone or email when an artist in that genre comes out with a song. They can have an excerpt from the song that people can listen to. There are so many good indie artists who never make the break into radio, and there is a lot of garbage on the radio because record companies push it down the public's throats. This would be a way for the people to discover the new music as opposed to record companies doing it for us. Myspace can also make the song available for purchase right there, and they get a commission. They can then make a deal with the artist that if x number of songs are sold, the artist has to agree to having their next single debut first on Myspace. I am a music lover and it would be great to have this available at my fingertips. I don't have the time or patience to fish through the new music of indie artists. The music would come to me, and it wouldn't take more than ten minutes to listen to all the excerpts in the genres that I like best.

It 's not marketing that makes sustainable success. First you need to be able to provide a service/product that users would kill for. And that 's the hard part, so I think your assignment is utterly off-base. Hopefully, you are not paying for that class.

I disagree. With amazing marketing, you can sell anyone anything. Marketing is not about making a product that people would kill for. Marketing is making people kill for a product they didn't even know they wanted. Furby anyone?

MySpace's only chance is to be a niche social network. They are currently trying to do that with being a more "band" focused social network. Justin Timberlake is now an equity holder, so I would say something along the lines of making himself directly available to MySpace users and getting other celebrities to do the same.

Yahoo is not failing. They still have a ton of users, largely from Yahoo Mail, who go to the Yahoo homepage everyday. Their mistake was building themselves as a media company and not a technology company, however that is not the worst thing in the world. My long term bet on search is it is going to have a much bigger question answering aspect to it (think Siri) so if I were Yahoo I would work on developing that technology (you can sure as hell bet Google is working on it with their semantic web they are developing) that can take a question and turn it into an answer, as opposed to just a listing of 10 websites. Or they could go in a completely different direction (and will probably be somewhat ok because of everybody who uses Yahoo). Really, Yahoo is living off of their actions from 10+ years ago and hasn't really done a single bit of innovating since then. So all they have to do is innovate some (like the example above I gave) and they can increase their market cap and value a ton.

That doesn't build a sustainable business. I don't think Furby is doing much of anything after their initial buzz wore off because the product had no value add.

You don't run a $20bil business (Yahoo) with marketing and no substance behind it.
