Help! What comes first the chicken or the egg?

I have a brand new classifieds site. I thought it would be great to advertise because it has so many options for linking but the problem is that I am already receiving hits but no one is posting. I am assuming it is because there are not any links on there already? So someone please tell me how to go about doing this? Should I work on the postings first, or advertising first? Also, how would I work on the postings? Do you copy and paste from another site? I have read that somewhere but it seems like you would be penalized. Someone please help. My site is Pagelist. I will greatly appreciate the help.

Is it free to post on your site?

If possible I would try to contact company or persons that are already advertising on different classified sites and let them know about yours. offer them a free posting if possible.

Just do mass advertising to people that would normally post to classified sites. Make them an offer that if they start advertising now while the site is new, you will promise them free posting for life or some type of credit or such.

Make a scraper to scrape classifieds from another website and post them on yours. Then people will say "I found your number on [Yoursite]" and eventually word will get round.

You can hire few persons and pay them to post on your site to let it get a kick start.

There is nothing wrong with the copy and paste idea. Who will complain? The person selling won't be mad, because they still made the sale. The other classified site could care less because they know you are no competition (no offense, just the truth) And as far as being penalized, you won't out rank authority sites anyways. So it's a win

Whats with your title, I like to answer it. The answer is egg. Egg exist 300-400 million years ago during the time of dinosaurs and there was no chicken at that time. Chicken started appear just 35 million years ago.

on my classifieds site...I got a yellow pages scraper and scraped every company in every category I could find... I then put up a basic listing with their contacts and web address and had a "claim your listing" feature where they could log-in and get a half page listing...you can try and charge for this but I left mine free....I got sidetracked into lots of other projects and that site while still looking good got no promotion..and yet every week I get another company claiming their listing.

I have kept renewing the domain and will put more time into it later this year but I recommend getting as much stuff up there for free just to get rolling

LOL, yeah, it will be tough trying to outrank those big sites. Be prepared to stick with your site over the long haul
