SOLUTION to Google Penguin FOUND

l only started working for a proper SEO company a couple of months ago - I went in having more experience and more success with my sites than everyone else in the SEO department put together.
Their clients sites were all doing really good, but only because they were all big ecommerce sites that already had an offline following - that and because there was alot of content on the sites.

The content wasn't well optimized for search engines and their methods of backlinking were absolutely terrible, but on such a small scale that it hardly had any effect on them.

This update comes along and 3/4's of my sites almost completely die, while all of theirs which in comparison to mine were absolute crap (optimisation wise) started to gain rankings - and i'm not just talking about one or two sites, I'm talking about almost 60 sites that had poor levels of optimisation both on and off site.

At the same time, 3 or 4 of my newer sites which i've been developing really slowly and to a mad level of quality have all slightly improved in ranking, though i'll probably de-optimise them a bit now...

My conclusion from my/our situation: Google is actually punishing over-optimised sites like they said, while favouring sites that aren't very well optimised.

You can't get hurt by adding quality links and not cutting corners. Just do quality from now on and if there are some obvious red flags, then you need to remove them. Simple as that.

To think this is random is, in my opinion, just speculation. I tend to agree more with this: http://www.blackhatworld.com/blackh...ight-missing-point-googles-latest-update.html

If you have many sites there are definitely some trends.

I have not been affected at all from googles new update, My rankings actually are still the same but if they were affected i think its best you try new methods, etc. Not give up.

Please share your strategy backontrack

My input:

I spent three months rewriting content for an existing site that a biz partner has me working on since he had moved on to other things. I realize it could be a lot of factors but I did an article submission using spun content (not well spun either) and for a day or two it was actually on page one, then page two, then page 5 and now not appearing at all. So I think it could be likely that but as we all know, since we cannot deduce completely the factors that go into this update it could also be something else. I am curious as to others who have well developed web 2.0 properties that have good unique content, bios etc.. and how those money sites that have those links are doing so far.

I don't think G would go mess up everything on purpose just to scare off Black hat people. Sure that might be a consequence that would work in their favor but it does not do them any good to also penalize white hat sites from very legitimate companies that spend thousands on hiring SEO firms because in some of those cases those companies might also be doing PPC and/or generating revenue for Google in other ways with adsense etc.. why would they want to upset large firms who they make money from? Just to upset and scare off affiliate sites?

I agree with those who say they're trying to eliminate as much black hat as they can and like with any other update it takes time for them to get it right. I still wonder if a page like my home page that went from #8 to nowhere in just a few days could ever come back. I highly doubt it. I am thinking maybe it is time to spend extra money and have a good web 2.0 group of properties and add unique content to them with varied anchor text, outbound links to authority sites (so each article maybe has one link to a post on my money site and one natural link to an outbound authority site that is relevant to the topic) and then of course I have to make sure my anchor text is sometimes the KW, sometimes a similar word and sometimes just something like "Click Here"

Thoughts? A deep insight? A good limerick would even be appreciated at this point :)

Ehm... do you really believe than one bright morning everything will pop back and everything will be pre-penguin?

The only real thing you can do now is to get rid of low quality links (Including links from spunned content) to your money site and stop walking into the opposite direction (create more spammy links directly to the money site).

My spun content is probably more unique and better grammatical english than your hand written content...

Just saying :)

Or, the solution is to just start paying for clicks with Adwords. Those bastards at Google are probably hoping for an influx of new accounts from SEOs that have lost their whole businesses to the new updates.

Just relax. The game of SEO just got a lot more interesting. When things get tough, the tough get going..

The smart SEO'ers will now thrive, and the others will just - go get a job.

I don't think there is any conspiracy going on. Obviously Matt Cutty reads the BHW forum every day and religiously and when he sees everyone and their brother is doing Tier 1 Web 2.0 and then blasting it with xrumer/scrapebox, he sends his engineers to devise a way to stop that.

So now we have to think a lot more, and get out of "groupthink" and "obvious footprint" because Matty boy will always kill it, sooner or later (after letting us show our hands..).

I just love when people think they have everything "figured out" without any evidence backing it up.

It's even more fun when OP put a statement in the title such as this one.

My spun content is probably more unique and better grammatical english than your hand written content...

english = English.

Just saying ;)

Says the guy who hit top 10 on a $6MM+/yr profit keyword and lost it.

Read that thread, not a single site (including the EMD that the guy paid $150k for) survived in the top 10... :)
Literally... nothing left, they all fell to varying degrees. (#1 EMD went to #68 for instance)
Auxiliary terms are also the same, every last site in this incredible niche fell, again to varying degrees.
Several are totally washed away... and they had held positions for years.

english = English.

Just saying

You'd think in the modern world people could tell when someone is typing on a tablet and when they are not...

At any rate, my only point is, since I can get 10-15 articles from my spintax approved at EZine (when I hand do them) I'm pretty sure that content isn't the cause of this.
Hell, comments and Xrumer/DrupalX blasts are still working really well... been testing this basically non-stop since the 25th.

Google has clearly harmed several link types (web 2.0s in particular)

If you had 4 or 5% of your back links to junk and the other 95% coming from relevant sites you would be fine.
This is only a guess based on logic.

The more I look at what happened to my sites, the more I believe this.

I have sites with 100% junk backlinks. Pretty much of few thousands junk backlinks to each sites. None of them are affected. Moreover ranking has increased to all of them. But my primary blog which is about 3 years old and have high quality content and organic backlinks is nowhere at ranking.
I think this shuffle is pretty random.

I agree on random hitting as some of my sites lost top 10 rankings but others with same link strategy have still top 10 rankings, still doing things like I did before and waiting for new better update perhaps or not

Is Google screwing with us? Yes

Is Penguin update just temp? No, it is here to stay.

Does Penguin have bugs? Absolutely.

There is a pattern to Penguin, you just have to find it.

I had a website that was ranking on the front page until Friday evening. It survived the update, but tanked on Friday afternoon when they were tweaking it. The funny thing is, that website had major duplicate content issues. I dumped the thin 300 word or less content and replaced it with 1000+ word unique and original content. After Google crawled it and updated the search, I stayed in position, then a few days later, cya.

Coincidence? Maybe

I am assuming that Google likes spun and duplicate content or original. News websites are the biggest offenders.

Being familiar with how algorithms and companies work I highly doubt that OP.

When you want to implement a major "fix" over billions of pages, bugs are unavoidable - you simply cannot think of each and every nuance prior to implementing. Google will fix the current situation, but its not because they planned to nuke blackhatters, but because they will be fixing bugs.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ This

The "let's throw logic out the window" approach isn't something Google have done on purpose.
2 likely reasons (probably a bit of both)

New SERPS takes time to shuffle (days) interim states can look very bad.
Bugs in algorithm, hundreds of interlinking factors and some of consequences and factors have not been thought out or balanced properly.

Google update the algo in some small way all the time - every day.

Errors occured and sites need time to settle.

I'm betting spammy sites will overall have fared badly

But everyone is searching for exceptions to this and trying to nake out that the exception is the rule.

"Well if these two sites are ranking page one then that must mean"......

It doesn't mean anything. You need a massive sample size to see the effect, not cherry pick the few odd balls and hold them up as the rule which so many statistically challenged individuals are doing on BHW.

Or, the solution is to just start paying for clicks with Adwords. Those bastards at Google are probably hoping for an influx of new accounts from SEOs that have lost their whole businesses to the new updates.

I don't think that this anything to do with Adwords. Big Adwords accounts are pretty much a fixed monthly budget. Instead, I have a suspicion that this update is about Adsense and slicing up the pie. I'm not seeing many EMDs and Micro Niche Sites ranking above the fold. This along with showing direct answers from Freebase at the top of the page should increase ad revenue that they don't need to share with the publishers. In other words, you're been fired!

There is a lot of merit to this theory as this update has surely put many SEO companies on the ropes with their customers. I do the SEO for my company, but I could imagine if I paid another company and this happened to me, I would surely fire them on the spot.

I have purchased a ton of services in the BST section and right now I really don't want to buy anything b/c who knows what it will do and this is why I like your theory so much as it seems to be working on me!

It's funny that you wrote what you wrote as I was speaking with a mentor of mine about this and he said something very similar to what your theory says and it is so possible its ridiculous.

My SERPs are so messed up its funny. I wrote this is another thread but I have an e-commerce site and I have done SEO to target specific products that I sell, tied to specific keywords and none of the pages appear correctly for the keyword search term. For example, if one of my customers were to search for "big yellow trucks" then they should be shown the page on my site that sells "big yellow trucks", but instead google will return a page on my site that sells "little fuzzy bears"...or google will pick some random blog post off our blog that has very little if any backlinks pointed toward that page...

I don't know what to make of this, its really strange to see what has happened...

This shit reminds of the wizard of oz..."somewhere over the rainbow, way up high, there is a land that I have heard of"

This.

I am getting the weirdest pages being returned for my keywords on my sites. I have a number of keywords that my main domain used to rank for (www.domain.com) on page 1, but now for those same keywords I'm on like page 2 or 3, and the page in the results is www.domain.com/some-random-page.

Glad I'm not the only one.

Wait, what?

OP, your theory or speculation seems nice to believe in but I hardly believe this is true. Google seeks to improve its search results (hard to believe in but true) and not simply play with us and play mind games with us.

Veheme, actually, there is "very little" truth to your statement about Google seeking to improve its search results. You made that statement in sincerity but Google duped you much like Harold Camping duped his followers about the world coming to an end on May 21st, 2011.

To be crystal clear, Google's first and foremost primary mission is to increase revenue... by any means necessary. Which means that however the SERPS turn out is based solely on that objective and no other. To further clarify, if the search results were perfect for 99.999% of the searchers but Google's income dropped, they [Google] are going to re-architect the SERPs to increase their income even if it meant the SERPs made no logical, mathematical or scientific sense.

If you study and understand the stratagems, schemes, tactics as well as the architecture of "Social Engineering" then you will understand how governments, corporations, religious organizations and various groups use social engineering to manipulate, control, brainwash, mislead, deceive, impute fear on and to otherwise herd the people in a certain direction.

On one hand, Google is masterfully implementing Social Engineering schemes and stratagems to persuade the masses that everything they do is for the good of the SERPs. On the other hand, behind the scenes, they are nefariously engaging in manipulating the SERPs for their monetary gain. This is why they are facing antitrust lawsuits in the USA and Europe. Those with high level mathematical and computer programming skills have been able to detect and replicate these clandestine manipulations implemented by Google.

I can say from experience that...

That is a dangerous statement to establish financially altering decisions on. A person's experiences, however grand, should never be "THE" factor to set precedent for anything. That fact has proven time and again. Here is a case in point and I have plenty others.

I once did a research paper on a pilot who became wealthy from flying down to Colombia picking up yayo and transporting it back to New York. His experience? He had never got caught! When he decided to expand his operation, he hired some pilots by convincing them that HIS experience would be THEIR experience. Needless to say, two of his pilots quickly got nabbed by the DEA and ICE. A 3rd pilot went down to Colombia and met his death in a violent manner. Those three men lost everything because they made a decision based solely on the experience of that pilot.

Google is rewarding those quality sites or those sites which have great content since after many, many months of always upholding quality content in my links, I have finally seen the fruits of my labor which are untouchable rankings.

Here we go with experiences, yet again. Can you tell me how interpret these next set of experiences I'm going to describe? [Of course, I have to do this without eluding to who these individuals are or revealing their websites]. If you are in any of the private forums, then you probably know them and you most likely know about link sp*mming, and you probably know about cl*aking using Sh*d*w. I know link sp*mm*rs and cl*akers who have hundreds of highly competitive keywords on the pinnacle of the SERPs and they have not skipped a beat during these algo modifications. Translated; their sites are kicking butt!

So how are we to interpret THEIR experiences?

They clearly are using questionable methods to obtain high rankings in the SERPs. What's worse, unlike you; they ARE NOT using great content! They are not even using good content. Unlike you, they are using what can categorically be classified as 3rd rate content 4th rate content and flat out gibberish. In a lot of cases, they are combining character spinning with plagiarized content and yet they are still ranking for highly competitive terms.

Again, how do you interpret their experiences seeing that the route they took is the total opposite of yours?

As many on BHW have pointed out on numerous threads, there are all kinds of sites currently ranking high in the SERPs. Some of which have absolutely NO CONTENT! There are sites ranking with great content, poor content, dupe content, plagiarized content, spun content and auto blog generated content. Consequently, anyone asserting to have come to some sort of concrete foregone conclusion at this stage of the shake up, is most likely selling snake oil SEO.

The point being? Or, to better phrase, "What is Google doing?"

Google is cleverly using Social Engineering for the purposes of throwing out smoke and mirrors. What is their objective? It's threefold:

(a). Their main objective is to increase the number of AdWords Advertisers, thereby instantly increasing their revenues. Clearly, these latest algo modifications have forced many IMers to sink money into AdWords to make up for their drop in the SERPs.
(b). Google is attempting to create subterfuge to ward off the Antitrust suits they are facing. If you are following that development, then you know that the FTC just hired Beth Wilkinson. Beth is a former DOJ prosecutor, who has never lost a case. When the FTC made that move, it was letting Google know that they are in fact going to be sued by the FTC much like the case of The United States vs. Microsoft. Google is also facing the same type of lawsuit in Europe. If you recall, when Microsoft lost that lawsuit, it opened up the doors for companies like Google to sprout up.
(c). These algo modifications are also part of a public social engineering PR campaign to discourage and confuse those who compete against Google. Who competes against Google? Anyone not paying Google for advertising!

In summation, this is a time and era SEO wise, when everyone must buckle up, remain calm and ride out the storm. Right now, there are not a lot of concrete absolutes but one thing is for sure; you should not altogether stop your backlink building campaigns.

I start thinking that what this update do was remove the credability of emd doamins, thats all. Since most BH sites rely on an EMD domain,we saw such move in rankings. I dont think they updated anything else
