Should I go to college to learn Web design/programing?

Hey guys I was wondering if some on your could advice me on this.

I want to learn HTML and JQuery (Dont know is it is the same thing but I want to learn some coding and programming as well.) A cousin of mine and I are considering going to college to start taking web design class, I know I can learn almost everything online, but is it worth to go to college for it? besides a degree or certificate.

Any advice or help is more than welcome from guides/tutorials/opinions. Thanks for your time guys and have a good day/night depending on your country

Depends on few things. How much does it cost for you to go there? Who will be teaching you? There is a difference between teachers/professors who have been working as web designers/developers and who just "know" how to program.

The good thing about going there would be the credentials... but then again. People generally pay for the results you can produce, not the papers you have.

but i do know a number of people that have switched over to designing web sites etc. with no formal training.

If i were you i'd just get cracking on a site and playing around you then find out if its for you and if not just stop but if you go to college you be stuck on a course you hate!

Thanks guys that is exactly what I was thinking. Paying for something that I could learn for free is kind of stupid, plus I couldn't care less about some credentials as I will be doing designs for me, and rarely for clients. Thanks a lot, any more advice more than welcome.

If you're only going for the piece of paper, then I'd say generally no, unless there is a specific job you have your eye on that requires it.

Most people will tell you to go to college, but I disagree, especially if you are doing something in the tech/online industry. I never went to college and I do IM fulltime, self-taught entirely.

I would start just trying to teach yourself, plus if you turn out not liking it you won't lose the money you would if you went to college.

I would honestly suggest if you're going to college, take a different sort of a class. E.g. do a marketing/business degree, and learn the digital marketing stuff online including website creation. I say that because this field is changing rapidly, and the degree you've purchased will rapidly lose value after college, because the stuff you learned becomes out of date. Your marketing/business knowledge is always job worthy.

A college can't give any shit bro! I went to a computer/programming/web/hardware school for 4 years. But I didn't learn anything from that school. I have improved myself. it depends on you completely.

Go to Youtube and W3school and learn Wordpress and Joomla. They will pay off if you know how to earn money after learning wordpress.

If your aim is to only learn web designing & some programming language then you can do it by yourself. There are enough tutorial available online!
But going to college has its own advantages IMO. You get to meet a lot of people share common ideas, your people skills will improve! You can get many valuable contacts which will help you till the end of your life, at-least in my case it is so

Learn it from a HTML for dummies book and the other books in the series.

Get some free clients, learn it better, make sure to also know how to do SEO and rank.

2 years from now you will be doing great.

Do not listen to family or others who know nothing. They will be negative.

It will get worse when you make more money then them.

But this is you starting your life, so start it well and take advantage of something you like to do.

Not a waste if it's actually a good college. Some colleges out there can really help explore your knowledge base. I thought I was high and mighty in high school during photoshop classes, but following tutorials and such always helps you improve your skills. Its all about repetition.

go the college route.

They will make you learn in a structured approach.
It will cost you but you will get a piece of paper that opens doors.

If you want to make pennies on the dollar.... go ahead learn yourself and pad yourself on the back for making $500 sites.......
while someone with THAT paper... will work for a big corporations....making 6 figures with vacation time and all the good shit....and have a steady job...

College is the way to go....

Do not let anyone fool you that college is a waste of time.

Some people say... i make great money without college....
yeah you do ... and so do some plumbers that opened their own biz...
what is the point....

If you start coding on your own... you will develop a fuck up coding way.
If you learn thru schooling.... you will code in a standard way.

That is very important when collaborating on big jobs with millions of lines of code.

Back in the day when I use to do heavy coding in C... the guys that had no degree were the ones that got cut first.
Sometimes they had such bad coding habits.... that it opened their code to more errors.... and when a function had to be revised.... fuk... it was a nightmare fixing the code those guys wrote....

They were bright... but had bad structured coding.

so... go to college.

This is one aspect of college that people hardly ever state.

you make friends in college with people that one day will help run the world.

There is nothing more calming than knowing that your college buddy is the CEO of a company that you want to work for.

you are so right on this.... every self taught person thinks they are the sh!t....
but get a reality check when they bump into people in college that know so much more than them....

The big money is in doing designs for BIG clients..... not doing designs for you.

if ur intent in going to college to get a degree anyway so it looks good on your CV then do it ... employers do look for degrees now due to the job crisis but in the real world as mentioned above it dont mean then are the right person for the job ... maybe as mentioned do markting or business related... i did a business degree many moons ago back in the early 90's and IT was a small part of it ... I know more then the teacher .. and it was all just self taught through other peoples advice and forums are an ideal place to start .. if its a good one (like here) ... change ur name to sponge bob and just start to soak everything up .. then practice with free hosting for ur starter webs etc just for practice etc ... now with great packages about its all so much easier .... just dont do what i did and wasted years earning a living do in other areas and wasted an interest.. hence why im here myself now to learn and learn SEO in all ways possible lol ... just remember one thing in life ' you can NEVER know enough ' .. good luck whatever u do
