Youtube copyright dilemma

Hi.

In the past weeks I've been experimenting with different kinds of videos on youtube. I've uploaded funny videos, sports videos, trailers, goanimate stuff, movie clips and whatnot. Some were made by myself, some were rip offs of popular videos.

I got quite miserable views for most of them (around 5,000 altogether for 20 videos in a month). Then I uploaded 2 highlights reels of a football (soccer) game right after it was live on TV. I did the recording/editing etc. myself.

I got around 30k views within the 2 following days, lots of likes, some subscribers. My videos weren't even the most popular ones of the particular soccer game. The competition received 100k+ views in the same amount of time. But I thought my 30k were a good start.


Now, 2 days later, I've received a message from youtube due to copyright infringement (claimed by the football league). I was kind of expecting this sooner or later, even though I had added disclaimers to the video description. Also note that I was making NO money with this. It was just experiments for the time being. I didn't even provide a link to an external site or watermark the videos.

The trouble I have is: The videos of the same source material from the competitors are still there. They have 100k+ views and are still allowed to stay for some reason.

I have checked their tags, their video descriptions and everything. They have watermarked their videos with an url (something I didn't do), which I guess would have to make it even worse in terms of copyright violation. They also surely are not the copyright holders themselves.

I was threatened to have my account banned from youtube if I go against the copyright law one more time. At the same time, the competitors' channels have like hundreds of similar videos and millions of views. They are clearly visible everywhere on youtube and not hiding in some corner to avoid getting noticed by the copyright holders.

I thought I might be able to get such a channel running, but apparently my videos get deleted after a short amount of time, while the ones that are much bigger than my channel and that are obviously and openly making money with the copyrighted videos are allowed to stay for months and years.

What's the secret? How should I handle this?

this has happened to me aswell. it all depends on the viewers. They send in a copyright ticket and youtube views it

OK, are you sure it's always just random users that watch my video and then flag it? Because the message from youtube specifically said that it is the football league association that claimed copyright.

Maybe that's just what it says because they are the copyright holders, regardless of who reports it. Who knows.

If it's viewers who watch my video and then report it, does that mean that anyone could denuntiate anyone at any time and get their videos deleted? It seems to me that some hostile person could just wander around and flag all kinds of videos at will and then all those videos will get taken down by youtube, without much further ado or investigation.

And if it's really that easy to get videos deleted, I really, really wonder why my competitors can have channels with millions of views and hundreds of videos that contain copyrighted material.

Were they just insanely lucky and there was not a single hostile person among their millions of viewers? That seems too odd to be true.

YouTube does have automatic ways of detecting copyright infringements. I'm not sure how but it may have something to with comparing audio from the original broadcast to your video. The do this alot with Music.

It might also have to do with where your videos are showing up in the Search Results and what terms the Copyright holder are searching for.

Guess you just have to experiment some more and let us know if you find anything out.

Yes, maybe it's the competitors (though I wouldn't know a reason, because they had 100k views, I had 30k, so I wasn't really a threat to them or anything), maybe it's random people, maybe it's the actual copyright holders. I don't know.

But is there any way to prevent this? I mean, with this method I can get around a million real views per month with little effort. It's also targeted views (all are football fans). Not uniques of course, but it's still good. Much better than the other methods I tried. Therefore I would like to keep it going.

And seemingly it IS possible, since other people are successfully doing it and have had the same kind of videos in their channels for months. For an unknown reason, my videos are deleted and their videos aren't.

Do you think that using video editing software to MIRROR the image of the video would suffice to avoid copyright infringement? I've seen that in some other videos in the past, where all videos of the source material were deleted, but the ones that had a mirrored image stayed. I've seen that for football videos and Simpsons episodes among other things.

The problem is, I only have 1 attempt left. Youtube wrote that they would ban my account for good if they catch me once more. It was also said that I wouldn't be allowed to make another account afterwards. Should I make 20 accounts now, using different gmail addresses and proxies to prepare for that situation or is that just empty words by youtube? In this forum here I've read people saying that their account was banned and that they would just make a new one. Is it that easy or are you banned for life once you've been banned once?

Hi dude .. Actually I havent tested this yet by myself .. but one of my mates is making videos long time already and he said that the simpliest way to avoid this is just making like a mix of related videos all of then for no longer than 30 seconds ... such way you are not avoiding any copyright and the same with the music ... dont upload the full song, but make small parts (les than 30 seconds) nd then make like a remix ... and such way.. U shouldnt have more copy right probs.

Anyway... always U are trying with copy right stuffs is better to have at least an extra account for testing the videos.. and only then to upload it to our main account.

I know that this is a long shot, but have you checked if your competitor has any affiliation with the network that broadcasts the games? They could be an official poster, or something similar. That would be one reason that YouTube isn't hassling them.

OK. Today my youtube account was suspended, even though I haven't uploaded any more videos to it. That means it was suspended for videos that were already online when I received the first warning.

I'd like to check which video was responsible, but I can't even try to log in to the suspended youtube account (which would probably lead to an error message and tell me why I was suspended), because the linked googlemail account now wants me to give them my phone number.

I have to assume this happens because of the suspension on youtube, right? Because googlemail doesn't state that as a reason. They want to verify my account because I am allegedly in "a new location" and "to save me from abuse". Thing is, I'm not in a new location.

Is this something googlemail just does from time to time? Or is this definitely connected to the youtube suspension? The mail account has existed since 2009, so it's not like they can regard it as some spammy account that was just created to mess with youtube...

It's all a bit messed up.

just so you know, and this is from practise and testing, once one of your videos is
deleted for copyrights infringement or scam flaggs etc from an IP that ip is indefinetly banned from uploading again. once i change my

Hm, well, I don't know... I created a new account (created it a few hours before the other one was suspended) and uploaded a few videos. I used the same IP and it worked.

Got 33k views in about a day so far, but I have to say, I'm awaiting suspension again. Or at least the videos will be deleted and I'll receive a warning. However, nothing has happened SO FAR. Everything worked. Problem is, it most likely won't last.

60k views after 2 days now. The main video is getting loads of comments, is massively liked and favorited alot. It has recently been labelled as matching "third party content", but hasn't been deleted so far. Instead, youtube has started to place ads beneath the video and also inside the video.

I'm still awaiting deletion and suspension though. :croc:

youtube is a numbers game and don't expect that your channel/video won't be suspended it can happen anytime as you infringement their user policy. Don't regret of what got banned rather concentrate on uploading same stuff multiple times with different keywords tags to target vast audience. Just think if you had 30 videos instead of 1 you would have got like 30 * 20K views 600K views in total.

Youtube copyright is annoying as hell

Newsflash: I uploaded a few new videos yesterday and got around 200,000 views on them so far.

However, one of my videos from Sunday got blocked/deleted and I received my first strike in this account. Since all my videos in there are from the same source, I suspect them all to get blocked soon. That means farewell to the account.

The only way to keep this account (and my views so far as well as my subscribers) would be to delete every single video immediately and keep the channel empty until the next videos arrive (next week). I don't like this idea though, because my videos from yesterday are still getting crazy numbers of views and deleting them now would be just as painful as having them deleted and losing the account in a few days, when the hype has died down.

Bottom line is, I have figured out a nice way to get hundreds of thousands of views (usually per week, in this current case per day). I would be able to build a channel with a couple million views and a couple thousand subscribers in no time. However, those copyright issues spoil the whole fun.

The dilemma remains.

Probably better to delete everything and start using new tactics. I have not tried this myself and am not sure it will work, but why dont you either slow down the images or make them a little faster. As for the original audio you could try the same as the video (slow it down or make it faster). This might fool the software Youtube uses to verify copyright.

i have a lot of experience in split-testing similar youtube circumstances. i tried to quantify why sometimes it flies and sometimes not; especially the movie niche. proxies-elite/private shared/none| accounts pva|non|w/avatar/without/seasoned/new|links-none/watermarked in video/in message body/bitly'd/no links.

really, i spent hundreds on this and there is no consistancy - none. no rules, nothing to quantify and adapt too; basically, sometimes it works and sometimes it don't.

Just take the audio track and put an EQ and/or compressor/limiter on it, this will make it vary from the original source to avoid automatic detection.
To make the video vary from the original source, just watermark it or put a simple filter on it using After Effects or Premiere Pro (Adobe).

If you put 'Parody' in the title and put a joke in the video making fun of the content (at the end would be best, you could insert a text slide) so that it could possibly be interoperated as a parody by some people (not a satire), you will be immune from copyright laws. This is ok even if your project is for profit. In copyright law parody comes under 'fair use'.
