A DR 5 site ranks #1 for pbn links with zero links to the page. Traffic beating backlinks, or just a soft SERP?

@DJ.Bud sent me a video this week about ranking with basically no SEO, and the same idea keeps coming past me in different wrappers: traffic is stronger than backlinks now. So I pulled the numbers on the example people keep citing, because if it is real I want to be doing it.

backlinksmatters.com. DR 5. It ranks #1 in the US for "pbn links" (KD 29), and the page it ranks with has zero referring domains pointing at it.

134 visits in June, 11,782 in July. Almost all of it is one page about compiling Source Filmmaker models, which has nothing to do with SEO: 13,043 of the 13,278 sitewide visits, off a KD 2 keyword they hold in the top 3 in every country I checked.

That part is genuinely clever and I am not knocking it. "SFM Compile" is a branded term whose brand is scattered across a pile of churn domains all fighting each other, so one competent tutorial walked straight in. Good spot by whoever found it.

The story that got attached to it is that the traffic then powered the commercial page. That is the bit I cannot make work.

The pbn links page has been ranking and climbing since March. Ahrefs has no traffic history for the Source Filmmaker page before July at all. The money page was already there four months before the traffic existed.

The boring explanation fits better. "pbn links" is a 500 search SERP and it is not settled. Ahrefs has a second site sitting at position 1 for the same term, on under a tenth of the traffic, with no unrelated traffic page anywhere on the domain. If a 13,000 visit page and a 1,200 visit page both take the same spot, traffic is not what is deciding it. And the domain is not link free either, it carries 374 live backlinks across 344 referring domains. Junk, going by a DR of 5, but junk is not nothing.

I sell links, so weigh my scepticism accordingly. I would still rather be corrected than keep repeating something that is wrong.

So has anyone here actually reproduced it? Specifically an unrelated traffic page moving a commercial page on the same domain, where you could rule out the SERP just being soft. That is the part I have never seen anyone isolate.

can i be a Pessimistic guy and guess this people are just buying traffic to promote themselves somehow ?

Interesting analysis. As someone still learning seo I wonder if this is more about a weak serp than traffic itself. Have you seen the same pattern hold up in a more competitive niche?

buying traffic to promote themselves
Fair instinct, wrong target this time. The SFM page holds top 3 for its keyword in every country I checked, and the visit curve tracks those rankings. Bought traffic shows up as visits without rankings, this is the opposite. If anything got promoted it is the story about the site, not the site itself. The legend has travelled a lot further than 13k visits a month deserves.

weak serp than traffic itself
That is where I landed, yes. The tell is the second site holding the same #1 with a tenth of the traffic and no unrelated traffic page anywhere on the domain. If traffic were the lever, those two results could not coexist.

And no, I have not seen it hold in a competitive niche, which is really why I started the thread. Every example anyone cites is a sub 1k search SERP nothing serious is fighting for. The day someone shows me an unrelated traffic page moving a money page in insurance or casino SERPs, I will happily eat this post. Until then I file "traffic beats backlinks" under things that are only true where nothing else is competing.

Yes, it's definitely not directly the traffic from the other page.

Pages never just appear for the broad keyword straight away unless you are an authority site and ideally in a related topic.

You always rank first for longtails and Google assesses the page over time and gives you more and more traffic.

There was also a core update in May and a spam update in June.

I also know this isn't the case as a fact because I've seen it in my own sites. Traffic spikes from single pages don't have any impact on the rest of the site. That page was growing.

At a push you could say the site got a slightly positive boost from extra on-site signals. This does have an impact, but you won't just magically rank for a broad keyword on another page because of traffic.

You'll receive some positive signalling, which can accelerate an already positive trajectory, which is likely what happened here.

Yeah the timeline kills the sexy version for me. People are using “traffic” as a bucket for 5 different things... crawl frequency, brand/search demand, user signals, internal link flow, and just Google re-testing a weak SERP.

If the SFM page had strong internal links into the PBN page before the climb, maybe there’s a small sitewide nudge, but that’s not “traffic ranked it”. That’s just a domain with one page Google likes getting a bit more trust passed around. @Hetneo the clean test would be two money pages on same fresh-ish domain, only one getting fed from an unrelated traffic page, no new links, no anchor changes, no topical overlap. Never see anyone show that part, only screenshots after the fact.

Accelerant, not fuel. That is the most testable version of this anyone has put up, and it explains the whole genre in one line: every screenshot in every "traffic beats links" thread shows a page that was already climbing before the traffic showed up. Nobody ever posts the flat page that traffic rescued, because that page does not seem to exist. Your longtail point matches the timeline here too, the pbn links page had been grinding upward since March while the SFM page had no traffic story at all before July.

only one getting fed from an unrelated traffic page, no new links, no anchor changes, no topical overlap
Right design, and I think you have also named the reason nobody runs it. Four months of holding two pages still to prove a negative, and a null result sells zero courses. The people best equipped to run the test are the ones making money from the story staying alive.

I am half tempted to burn a spare domain on it. Two thin money pages, one internal link from a junk traffic page, hands off, and I post the numbers either way.

There is a cheaper pile of evidence sitting in this forum already though: the negative case. Plenty of you have had a random page take off on a domain with money pages sitting right next to it. If traffic moved rankings, that would be the most repeated story on BHW. So, honest question: anyone ever seen their money pages climb after an unrelated page went viral? The silence on that one is data too.

I checked almost all sites on first page and I've noticed something. Except the site in discussion, no other site has social media presence. Some have a limited presence on 1 or 2 platforms, but mostly non-existent. It seems like many are just publishing a landing page and leaving it at the mercy of Google. They are not bothering about EEAT signals. One site ranked very well because of author bio - that too, a fake one. Some have fake endorsements from non-existent people. There is no reason for Google to rank these anonymous sites without strong EEAT signals - particularly when they want to sell services. I didn't check contact pages though. It's just first impression so it could be wrong. The site in discussion has email in footer unlike others, so again they have an advantage. Someone working in the niche should try pushing their site with a strong online presence and brand signals.

If traffic was the deciding factor that gap shouldn’t exist. worth skepticism until someone runs a proper controlled test.

This is the piece I had not checked, and it changes the read. If the rest of page one is anonymous landing pages with fake author bios and no social footprint anywhere, then this SERP is not just soft on links, it is soft on trust, full stop. The winner is not the site the traffic powered, it is the only site on the page with a pulse. An email in the footer as a ranking factor, lol. Google in 2026.

It also cleans up the one loose end I had. The second site holding #1 in Ahrefs, the one with a tenth of the traffic and no viral page anywhere on the domain, never fit the traffic story. It fits this one: both winners are just marginally less anonymous than the rest of the cohort. What is being sold as traffic beats links might really be basic hygiene beats nothing.

The spare domain offer from upthread stands, but Starblazer basically designed a cheaper test. If you already sell in this niche you can run it on a live site today: add the boring trust stack, a real about page, an author who exists, socials that are not dead, and touch nothing else. No new links, no new content. If this SERP is being decided on trust scraps, you move. If nothing happens in 60 days, that is data too, and worth posting in here either way.

Anyone actually fighting in this SERP willing to try it?
