Lot of redirect horror stories in here and yeah they sting the most. Mine was different though, I had noindex left on from when the site was in dev and just never noticed for weeks. Pages were getting written, published, everything looked fine in the cms but nothing was showing up. Felt like screaming into a void.

@Smart Ranking Hub the staging thing is brutal, crawl budget waste is one of those problems people dont take serious until it bites them.

Honestly the small lesson from all of this is just check your indexing and robots stuff regularly. Takes 5 min and saves months.

@david.willy6 those redirect issues are a nightmare but messing up canonical tags is right up there. Seen a migration once where the dev accidentally hardcoded the canonical link in the header. Every single post on a huge site ended up pointing to the homepage. It didn't show any errors on the frontend so nobody noticed for weeks until traffic tanked and gsc showed thousands of excluded pages. Google basically deindexed the whole site because it thought every page was a duplicate of the home page... took months to recover from that.

For me, it was accidentally blocking important pages from being indexed. Everything looked fine until organic traffic slowly dropped. Ever since then, I always double-check robots.txt, meta tags, and Search Console after making site changes.
