Are internal links becoming more important than backlinks for smaller sites?

Lately I've noticed some smaller content sites getting decent ranking with very few backlinks, but strong internal linking and better topic structure.

Feels like Google is rewarding content organization and relevance more than before, especially for informational keywords.

Are they new websites or old websites? How old are the domain names?

I wouldn't be surprised. I've seen a few sites with barely any backlinks outperform bigger competitors simply because their content is better organized and answers the topic more completely.

From what I've seen, it's a mix. Some are fairly new sites, but a few also look like older domains that were already sitting with some authority.

The interesting part is that even newer sites seem to move faster when the structure and internal linking are done well.

I've noticed the same trend. Strong internal linking and clear topical structure can have a huge impact on smaller sites, especially early on, but backlinks still matter—internal links help Google understand your content, while backlinks help build authority.

Yeah, that makes sense. Internal linking definitely helps with clarity and indexing early on, especially for smaller sites.

But I agree, backlinks still seem to be the main factor when it comes to building real authority in competitive spaces.

i think both are still super important, a small site should likely focus on internal linking, then when ranking hits a plateau, it can focus on backlinking for more growth
Yeah, that makes sense. Internal linking builds a strong base, and backlinks help push things further when you want more growth.

Interesting! Are you focusing mostly on informational content, or have you seen similar results with transactional keywords too? I noticed topic depth plays a huge role lately.
Mostly I've seen it with informational content so far. Haven't tested much on transactional keywords yet, but topic depth definitely seems to matter in both cases.

I've noticed that too. For smaller sites, improving internal linking and topical coverage often delivers quicker gains than chasing backlinks, but backlinks still play an important role when it comes to building authority and competing in tougher SERPs.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I've been seeing too. Internal linking seems to move the needle faster early on, while backlinks become more important as competition increases.

Totally different ranking factors

I’m noticing the same trend for smaller sites, where internal linking improves indexing and topical clarity.
Still, backlinks seem necessary for authority in competitive keywords.

Yeah, that's pretty close to what I've been seeing. Internal linking helps a lot with the foundation, but backlinks still seem hard to replace when competition gets stronger.

I’ve seen small sites punch way above their weight once they clean up their internal links, almost like giving Google a little treasure map for free. For me, the sweet spot is keeping clusters tight and making sure every page has a clear job. Backlinks still move the needle, but I treat them like spice instead of the whole meal. Internal linking feels like the part I actually control day to day.

A lot of smaller sites are managing to rank with almost no obvious backlink profile, but what stands out is how well the content is structured around a single topic and how clean the internal linking is.

It really feels like Google is getting better at understanding topical relevance on-site. So instead of just counting external signals heavily from day one, it’s giving more weight to how well a site covers a subject cluster and how logically the pages are connected.

Especially for informational keywords, a well-organized “mini authority site” can still compete pretty well even without a strong backlink profile in the beginning.

Backlinks still matter long-term, but the entry barrier now seems more about structure and relevance than pure link volume at the start.

I would not say backlinks matter less, but the threshold for ranking informational content seems lower when a site demonstrates strong content organization, intent alignment, and crawl efficiency.

Yes, I’m seeing something similar lately. A lot of newer sites are starting to rank with minimal backlinks when the topical structure and internal linking are done well. It really feels like Google is giving more weight to content depth and how well a topic is covered rather than pure authority alone. Still, backlinks help, but they don’t seem to be the only driver anymore for informational keywords.

internal linking has become more important for helping google understand structure and topical relevance especially for small sites but backlinks are still a stronger authority signal overall the best results usually come from combining both rather than relying on one

I've noticed that Google seems to pick up on clusters that make sense to users, not just bots. If you group related posts together with smart anchors and don't overdo it, your bounce rate drops and session duration perks up too. I also try to send some love to neglected deep pages to keep them in the loop, not just the money pages. Even on small sites in 2026, it really helps keep things ticking.

I agree about giving attention to the deeper pages too. It's easy to focus only on the main pages, but updating and linking to older content can help keep the whole site active over time.
