Are internal links becoming more important than backlinks for smaller sites?

Lately I've noticed some smaller content sites getting decent ranking with very few backlinks, but strong internal linking and better topic structure.

Feels like Google is rewarding content organization and relevance more than before, especially for informational keywords.

Anyone else seeing similar results recently?

For smaller sites, strong internal linking and clear topical structure can make a big difference, especially on low to mid-competition keywords.
 
Interesting! Are you focusing mostly on informational content, or have you seen similar results with transactional keywords too? I noticed topic depth plays a huge role lately.
 
Internal links help spread the juice you already have, but they aren't a replacement for real backlinks, those small sites are likely winning on low competition keywords that the big guys aren't even targeting, you still need external votes if you want to rank for anything that makes real money.
 
Yes, I've been noticing that too lately. Some smaller sites with solid topical structure and smart internal linking are ranking surprisingly well even without massive backlink profiles. It seems Google is understanding content relationships better now, especially for informational searches where relevance and organization matter a lot.

If the backlinks are high quality, they are still an important factor in helping a blog rank higher. Internal links mainly help optimize the blog and support SEO, but they are not the deciding factor for competing at high rankings.
 
Yeah, I’ve noticed the same. A lot of smaller sites with clean topic clusters, strong internal linking, and content that actually answers search intent are starting to outperform bigger sites with outdated SEO tactics. Feels like Google is leaning harder into relevance and topical depth instead of just backlink volume.
 
For smaller sites, internal links are super underrated. they help google to understand structure and push authority to importaant pages.

yes, seeing this too lately.Some smaller sites are ranking well even without heavy backlinks mainly because their content is well organised and everything is connected properly through internal links.Feels like google is paying more attention to topical relevance now especially on informational keywords.

Yes, a lot of people are noticing that lately, especially on informational searches. Google seems to be rewarding sites that have strong topical relevance, clean site structure and helpful content instead of just raw backlink numbers. Backlinks still matter, but good internal linking and covering a topic deeply can now move smaller sites much faster than before.

Yes internal can help dramatically because google's bots can crawl your website/blog better and understand what is it about. Also I believe that content is king therefore topic structure helps A LOT.

That's probably true for a lot of cases honestly. Most of the smaller sites I checked were targeting pretty low competition informational terms, so the strong structure may have been enough to push them initially.

I still think backlinks matter long term, especially once you move into more competitive keywords.

Absolutely not. Never.

If you take those same sites and give them good links they'll skyrocket.
 
Yes, especially for smaller sites targeting low to medium competition keywords. Strong internal linking, topical clusters, and good content structure help Google understand relevance much better now. Backlinks still matter, but clean site architecture and topical authority seem to be carrying more weight than before

Yeah, I'm starting to feel the same honestly. Internal linking seems to help a lot with structure and indexing, but backlinks still look important once the competition gets tougher.

Yeah, I'm starting to see the same thing. Structure and relevance definitely feel more important now for smaller sites, especially in informational niches.

Backlinks still matter, but they don't seem to carry the same weight on their own anymore.
 
i think both are still super important, a small site should likely focus on internal linking, then when ranking hits a plateau, it can focus on backlinking for more growth
