Is 1:1 aspect ratio dead for Meta ads in 2026?

Hey everyone,

Back in the day, 1:1 (square) was basically the go-to for Facebook and Instagram feeds. It was easy, clean, and worked everywhere.

But now I’m seeing more and more people pushing 4:5 (vertical) as the “new default” since it takes up more screen real estate and arguably performs better.

So I’m wondering:

  • Is 1:1 basically outdated at this point?
  • Should we be switching fully to 4:5 for Facebook + IG feed in 2026?
  • Or is it still worth testing / keeping 1:1 in the mix?
  • Are you guys designing creatives only for 4:5 now and letting Meta crop the rest?
For context, I obviously know Stories/Reels are always 9:16, that part is clear. It’s just the feed placements that feel a bit uncertain right now.

Would love to hear what’s actually working for you right now

as my opinion, 1:1 is safe bcs it is default screenshot, then u also can test it
4:5 is the trend now, => recommend to use

Honestly, this is great news. Things just got way better.

for me, for ads to be cheaper, you need to add reels to the places where your ads should show. that makes 4:5 the recommended but even at that, you have to be careful cos i have seen some ads with the 4;5 size with the key contents of the cut of from what can be seen when the ads show.

I'm using a 1:1 ratio for the news feed, 4:5 for Instagram, and 9:16 for the news reel.

Currently, a 1:1 ratio is recommended for the news feed and a 9:16 ratio for the reels.

The 4:15 ratio is often cropped on news feeds, so we should use a mix of ratios to suit our needs.

I think both ratios are fine and effective.
We do all three of them, there’s still a lot placements that require 1:1, so pushing just 4:5 and 9:16 makes those look cut. We usually do 1:1 for Facebook Feeds, 4:5 for Instagram. Meta says that it supports 4:5 for Feeds on Facebook, but they get cut a lot, sometimes they appear fine, sometimes are cropped to square.
