I have been trying to do SEO for my small website for a couple of months now , mostly by writing blog posts and adding keywords . I am not really sure if i am doing things right or just wasting time .

How can I tell if my SEO is actually working or making any real difference to my website ?

Honestly, SEO doesn’t show results overnight, so 2–3 months is still early — but there are clear signs to check if you’re on the right track.

First, look at your traffic. If your website visitors are slowly increasing (even a little), that’s a good sign. Use tools like Google Analytics or Search Console to track this.

Second, check keyword rankings. Are your blog posts starting to appear on Google (even on page 2–5)? If yes, your SEO is working — it just needs more time and backlinks to push higher.

Third, impressions matter. In Search Console, if your impressions are growing, it means Google is showing your site more, even if clicks are still low.

Also, see if your content is getting indexed properly. If your posts aren’t even indexed, then SEO isn’t working yet.

One more thing — just writing blog posts isn’t enough. You also need:

  • Backlinks (very important)
  • Proper keyword targeting (not too competitive)
  • Internal linking
  • On-page optimization (titles, meta, headings)

If you’re only writing content without backlinks, results will be slow or minimal.

So basically:
➡️ More impressions = good
➡️ Better rankings over time = good
➡️ More traffic = working SEO

If none of these are improving after 3–4 months, then you need to change your strategy.

You can check by looking at a few things: are more people visiting your site over time, are your pages showing up higher in Google search for your keywords, and are visitors doing what you want (like signing up or buying)? Use Google Analytics and Search Console to track traffic and keyword positions. If traffic and rankings slowly improve, SEO is working; if nothing changes after months, you might need to change your strategy.

Isn't it obvious that if your site is not ranking and driving traffic, your SEO is not working as it should? What other metrics are you supposed to measure it with?

If your website has improved in ranking , it is a sign that you have done good seo .

I usually check Google Search Console clicks and keyword ranking movement over 2 to 3 weeks, if impressions and positions are slowly going up then SEO is working fine.

I check if organic traffic is slowly increasing week by week and if new keywords start bringing clicks without extra backlinks, that’s usually a clear sign SEO is moving in right direction.

The easiest way to tell if your SEO is working is by looking at early signals like whether your pages are getting indexed, impressions are increasing, and you are slowly starting to get clicks or rankings beyond page 5. In the beginning, you won’t see big jumps, but steady growth in visibility means you’re on the right track. If nothing is moving after a couple of months, it usually means your content isn’t matching search intent or isn’t strong enough yet.

SEO is more about consistency and tracking than just adding keywords and blog posts. Focus on checking simple signs like search impressions, clicks, and whether your pages are starting to show up in Google over time.

To assess effectiveness, monitor whether the number of visitors to your website from Google is increasing month by month and whether your target keywords are improving their ranking on the first page. Finally, check the conversion rate do visitors take any further action such as making a purchase or leaving their contact information? Use Google Search Console and Google Analytics to track the graphs if there's a steady upward trend, you're on the right track.

Keyword rankings are the primary signals that your SEO strategy actually works. Even a small improvement can indicate progress. Next, check Google Search Console to see whether your site is receiving impressions and you're starting to get clicks and traffic. It's a strong effort, and your SEO efforts are moving in the right direction.

Publishing content and adding keywords alone won't help you in improving your SEO efforts. There are many activities to do.

If Search Console is showing more impressions, better average positions, and more clicks over time, that’s usually a good sign SEO is working. Then I check Analytics to see whether that traffic is actually useful, not just growing on paper.
For me, Search Console shows whether Google is giving the page more visibility, and Analytics shows whether those visitors are doing anything valuable once they land.

That’s normal early on.
If you’re seeing even small impressions, clicks, or slight ranking improvements, then your SEO is working. It’s usually slow at the start, so gradual progress is the main sign you’re on the right track.

Check GSC ___ impressions, clicks and keyword positions. If those are growing, SEO is working even if traffic is still low. SEO take time

From my experience At first, you will see a few impressions, then some clicks, and over time your traffic begins to grow. you should usually check Google Search Console to see impressions and clicks are increasing. It is not instant, but if you see steady growth, even small, your SEO is definitely working.
