Most overrated travel destination

Sometimes a place looks amazing on social media but feels disappointing when you actually visit.

What’s the most overrated travel destination you’ve been to?

Touristic beaches (doesn't matter which country)...as an example, bondi beach in Sydney. It looks and sounds awesome in pictures and videos but once you get there it's just way too crowded and loud. I would rather go to a "less beautiful" beach than a crowded one!
 
For me, it was Times Square in New York City.

Online, it looks vibrant and exciting, but when I visited, it mostly felt crowded, noisy, and very touristy. Bright screens everywhere, long lines, and everything around it is overpriced. It’s interesting to see once, but definitely not somewhere I’d spend much time again.

Sometimes the places that look less “Instagram-perfect” end up being much more enjoyable in real life.

Yeah, I’ve heard the same from a lot of people. Famous beaches often look amazing in photos, but the crowds can really change the experience.

Bali gets mentioned a lot in discussions about overrated destinations. It seems like social media sets very high expectations, and the most popular areas can be extremely crowded. I guess it really depends on which part of Bali someone visits.

I’ve heard similar opinions about Times Square from many travelers. It looks exciting online, but people often say it’s very crowded and commercial. Probably still worth seeing once because it’s iconic, though.

True. Sometimes the less popular beaches end up being more enjoyable just because they’re quieter.

Times Square itself is nothing but a tourist destination. NYC is a wonderful place if you don't go to the tourist areas.

Even just a few blocks off Times Square, you'll find great local restaurants, and heading up to midtown, upper east side, the village, you'll wish you had more time to spend there.

I'm surprised people go to Palm Beach as a vacation destination... it's crazy expensive to shop there, and the views are negligible.

A few miles north one can enjoy the Florida beaches in Riviera Beach without the tourist noise.
 
For me, Bali is a bit overrated. It looks amazing on Instagram, but some areas are extremely crowded and touristy in real life.
 
For me, a place that often feels overrated for many travelers is Bali. On social media it looks like a peaceful paradise with empty beaches and stunning temples, but when you actually visit popular areas like Canggu or Seminyak, it can be extremely crowded, full of traffic, and heavily commercialized. The reality can feel very different from the perfectly curated Instagram photos.

That said, it doesn’t mean the destination is bad it just depends on expectations. If you explore quieter areas like Ubud’s outskirts or the north of the island, the experience can still be incredible. Social media just tends to highlight the **best angles while hiding the crowds and chaos**

For me, probably Dubai. The skyline looks insane online, but when you come there, it feels a bit artificial and very commercial. Lots of malls, luxury... but with the country’s internal life remains quite closed off.
 
Times Square as many visitors say it's basically just bright billboards, huge crowds, and expensive shops. People often feel a quick visit is enough.
 
Surprisingly, Miami

It’s great if you love clubbing. Beach is OK. Food was meh
Palm trees are kind of beautiful

Other then that boring
 
For me, Paris felt a bit overrated. I had built it up in my head for months, but the crowds around the main attractions made it hard to enjoy. Don’t get me wrong, the cafés and streets are beautiful, but it wasn’t the life-changing experience I’d imagined. I’ve realized that the smaller, lesser-known spots often leave a bigger impression. Now I try to explore hidden gems instead, and those trips always feel more memorable.
