Complete beginner here – looking for solid guides to learn Black Hat & White Hat SEO

I’m pretty new to this side of SEO and hoping to get some direction from you guys

I currently build websites as my main service, so I’m familiar with very basic on-page SEO and some technical aspects (site structure, speed, indexing, etc.). But when it comes to both Black Hat and White Hat SEO strategies beyond the basics, I honestly know almost nothing.

I’ve been trying to find solid guides or structured tutorials, but there’s so much scattered information out there that it’s hard to know what’s legit and what’s outdated.

I’d really appreciate it if you could point me toward (even just one of these if you don’t have everything):

• A roadmap of what to learn first (so I don’t waste time learning things I won’t really need)
• Common mistakes beginners make (so I can avoid them and save time)
• Beginner-friendly guides or courses (websites, PDFs, or videos)
• Threads here that are worth reading (from this forum if possible)
• Tools I should get familiar with (what’s waiting for me and what will make things easier)

I am not a one stop Source for all the info but from my experience i can tell you some golden nuggets which you can go through first!

1 - Try to learn EEAT, Topical Authority, Schema, Guest Posts Outreach
2 - Do not follow every other youtuber, linkedin SEO guru --- Most of them have never ranked a website and just produce content from already shared info.
3 - Common Mistakes as a Beginner --> Do not directly go for BIG competitive niches --- Payday, Crypto, Game Hacks --- I know these are where the Real $$$$ is, but as a beginner with limited knowledge and Budget -- you will just end up being disappointed and probably may lose interest. Find easy to rank keywords which may not bring lots of $$ but still you will gain confidence by ranking them and then gradually move to moderate and high competitive niches!
4 - You can look around here in various sections -- you will find enough knowledge to prepare yourself to execute everything needed to build or rank a website.
5 - Tools -- SEmrush, SurferSEO, Ahref , Screaming Frog, Google Webmaster Tools (GSC) --- Just learn these few initially, and you will already be ahead of 70% SEO..

I suggest beginning with white hat SEO. That includes creation of good content, link building, guest posting and internal linking. Blackhat SEO is a bit more advanced and you can get your website/blog penalized and loose interest that's why I'm suggesting to learn whitehat first. You can look up all the terms I've mentioned on chatgpt or Google. Best tools to use for white hat SEO are semrush and ahrefs. I hope these help.

I’m not an SEO specialist (although I understand it), I’m a link builder. I can share актуal topics that are worth studying. Link building is one of the pillars of SEO, and without it, it’s impossible to rank a site higher in Google.

1. Guest posts and outreach. These are similar methods and are the foundation of white-hat SEO. They can also work very effectively in combination with black-hat tactics.
2. Crowd links, Web 2.0, profiles, blasts. These are placements on free forums and platforms. They should mainly be used to diversify the anchor list. It’s unlikely you’ll gain significant authority from this method alone.
3. Reddit and Quora. Also forums, but with high trust. That’s why they deserve a separate category. They are more difficult to work with, but the potential results are stronger.
4. Link tiers. Strengthening your guest posts with cheaper links that point to them.
5. Drops and redirects. It’s worth understanding this area. You can find a good abandoned website and acquire it. Then either place a link from it or set up a 301 redirect to your site to strengthen your backlink profile.
6. Homepage placements and sitewide links. These links are highly valued and very difficult to obtain, but the impact can be significant.
7. Hacked sites. This is purely black-hat. Still, it’s useful to understand how it works, since competitors might use such tactics against you.

If you want a simple roadmap, start with search intent and keyword research first. Then learn how content actually ranks in competitive spaces. After that, study link building patterns and how authority compounds over time. Don’t jump into tactics before you understand why pages rank.

Biggest beginner mistake is chasing methods without understanding fundamentals. Focus on one niche, test slowly, and observe cause and effect instead of copying random strategies.
