Building a Successful Online Forum

How do you plan to monetize?

So far, I am looking at Google's AdSense. It is easy to setup, monitor, and cash out.

One of the forums has spawned the idea of a secondary site from which I am currently looking to sell physical products. So, let's pretend one of the forums I started was called "forum.tld" and forum.tld is a free community for people interested in "abc". Well, since forum.tld was such a promising forum I looked into other domain names related to "abc" and forum.tld. I eventually found a domain, let's call it, "product.tld". product.tld is specific to one sub-forum within forum.tld but it is a very big topic and industry. (The industry that product.tld will be dipping into was valued at $24B (USD) in 2023.) What I am currently in the process of doing is reaching out to manufacturers and determining if and how I can sell their products on product.tld. We shall see if anything comes of this. I am very hopeful. With a market that large I should be able to find manufacturers willing to work with me. I will also add, the domain I was able to snag is a gem, which will hopefully help. It is not a .com which really goes against my usual practice, but I think I can make it work.

Time will tell...

Do you think with Google AdSense you are giving up user experience?

I suggest focusing heavily on user engagement and finding ways to keep users active and interacting. Without user interaction, you won't gain much value from Google AdSense. The key to maintaining user engagement is building a community of loyal forum members. This loyalty comes from providing a valuable, ad-free experience initially, catering to their needs. Once you have established a substantial user base, then you can consider monetizing through ads. Short form, don't focus on monetization for wealth. Focus on user engagement which gives you value to generate wealth. Then monetization will come later on when you have built yourself a value to generate wealth which was by having a platform where users are loyal and consistently engaging which leads to having good metrics for your Google Adsense.

@rusomike90, although I do kinda feel like your post came out of nowhere, here is my response:

Do you think with Google AdSense you are giving up user experience?

The three areas I would be concerned for loss of user experience would be:

  • Speed
  • Appearance
  • Usefulness
SPEED
Since we are all users of BHW here, I did a quick comparison of one of my heavier traffic sites, which is using Google AdSense, and of BHW. I am doing this as a comparison, not as a criticism. I understand BHW is orders of magnitude larger than my site, but BHW is using premium forum software (xenforo) and I am using free forum software (phpBB) on this site, which seems to add some "bog." I used, what may be a biased tool for this, Google PageSpeed Insights to test both sites. On Mobile, my forum is keeping well below BHW's First Contentful Paint, Largest Contentful Paint, Cumulative Layout Shift, and Speed Index. BHW was 30ms lower in Total Blocking Time. In the JavaScript realm, BHW is doing a lot more than my tested forum. Both are seeing an increased load time with Google Tag Manager. I am only using Google here whereas, as I mentioned, BHW has a few additional JavaScript loads which adds more load time. Both sites could minimize code a bit better, which I may play with later. On Desktop, the gap grows and my sites speed performance increases ahead of BHW. Overall I am very happy with how my site is performing.

APPEARANCE
Since a goal of mine is to provide a quality community and resource to the users appearance has been very important throughout this entire project. I have played with AdSense over the years and am familiar with how it can get out of hand, especially if you give Google full access (Auto Ads). I am creating specific Ads for each forum and only placing them where they will not negate the user experience. This is not ideal for advertisers, but advertisers are not my target audience. Too many sites lose track of who their target audience is. They tend to believe if they cater to the advertisers they will make more money, which may be true in the short-term. But for a long-term, more lucrative experience, they should cater to the users, which is the strategy I have taken with this project.

USEFULNESS
Wherever possible I try to keep the advertisements in line using the Blocking Controls and other checks. Also, if you have been reading this thread since the beginning you may remember I weened my users into advertisements by placing cross-forum advertisements initially then working them into broader advertisements. I am still placing ads for my other sites, which would reduce the load time as those are just a local image pull, and which would be of possible usefulness to the users as I only do this where the interests may intersect. Based on the advertisement clicks I could see that the users are finding the advertisements of use.

Google AdSense does have an approval process which requires some type of minimums in content and perhaps traffic.

As I mentioned, my focus has never left the user. I see it as follows ... A business usually exists to make money. A business is often comprised of investors, employees, and customers. The person running the business, let's say the CEO, is responsible to the investors, and in some instances to the board, to make money. Foolish CEO's place their priorities as 1) investors/board, 2) employees, 3) customers. Higher quality CEO's recognize that as being backwards and place their priorities as 1) customers, 2) employees, 3) investors/board. As you implied, the reasons for this is, if you focus on your investors and employees you neglect your customers. If you focus on your customers then the others will self-align. This concept is true within all types of organizational structures, businesses, communities, families, sports teams, even nations.

When you say, "monetization will come later", I think you may not have been following this journey since the beginning. This thread is almost one year old. At what point is it acceptable to start monetizing? What is a "substantial user base?" The answers are unique to every instance. In this project, I have been very active in each community and am intently tending to them. I am responsive to each community and helping them grow into their own. "Later" is always there. Knowing when to act "now" is what separates success from failure.

In each forum I open up with the community about advertisements. After reading your post, I double checked, and I have not received any negative feedback regarding advertisement usage. The comments I have received is that I am incorporating advertisements in-theme and tastefully. So far, my forum communities have little heart icons over them and they are content. I will continue to keep an eye on them and adjust course to keep them that way.

Good luck, you're going to need it. You're around 15 years too late, i'll be amazed if you're even able to earn enough to cover the costs of your domain registration. The forum era is mostly dead these days, and is certainly not receptive to new forums.

One of the great built-in features of a forum is that you can go to the beginning of a thread and read from there...

To readdress this misconception about forums, forums are not dead. Most social media sites are forums. Twitter kinda broke away from the forum model, but then curved back around and espoused forum basics. Discord, forum. Instagram, forum. Tiktok, forum. SnapChat, forum. Facebook, forum. Reddit, forum. Even YouTube is a forum! A new player that is also breaking away in one way but holding tight to forum basics is Airchat ... we will see how they do. Lemon8, forum. You starting to get the idea? Forums are not dead.

If you want to pick on various forms of forums, so be it, but know what you are talking about before clacking on the keys.

Here is something else to twist your brain, forums are social media. Let that marinate.

Yes, a forum that has been around for around 20 years? And anybody whos been here for a while knows full well both the quality and quantity of posts here his diminished significantly in the past decade.

The rest of your post is mostly nonsense, you're trying to compare to places like Discord, Tiktok etc, which are unique social media platforms. You've bought a bunch of domains and just whacked on forum software, software that has been around for a long time and has seen less usage as time has gone on.

You're defensive tones says it all really, you know I'm right. You should cut your losses and move onto something that is actually going to turn a profit.

I actually think you are a troll.

I am not comparing myself to any other sites ... other than the competitors in each of my markets.

Yes, I did buy a bunch of domains. I did not just whack on forum software. I am individually cultivating each community.

One moment, I am going to reread my reply ... the only part of my response that may be misinterpreted as defensive would be the clacking comment, which I stand by ... and now this comment.

Either way, you did not read the thread from the beginning, which is understandable. This is a pet project that I am using as a test. So far, the results are that a large majority of my efforts failed, but the few efforts of mine that have taken root are making up for the failures. This is to say, I am not losing money. It is not yet in my ideal realm of ROI, but then I lean on the learning aspect of this project, especially given that was a known issue entering it. Also, I have made some really nice connections within several of the forums, which may even make it all a wash as well.

FWIW, you are still posting on a forum, and no one is holding you hostage to this thread and you are free to move on if this is not of interest to you.

Lol ok buddy, you've obviously got your head in the sand so i'll let you carry on. Have fun with your empty forums :)

lmfaoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo, this is fucking hilarious bro!!
I agree with this, the greatest entrepreneurs know when its time to cut losses and started walking again.

I was giving you positive feedback, and was questioning you as in like a curiosity thought, you told me you checked your forums and said "I have not received any negative feedback regarding advertisement usage" brother your living in lala land, that wasnt even my point lol. You think they will leave a message hey forum to much ads, they will leave! I was giving you friendly feedback on your possible and positive venture that could succeed, but its all about who running it.

I was giving you positive feedback, and was questioning you as in like a curiosity thought, you told me you checked your forums and said "I have not received any negative feedback regarding advertisement usage" brother your living in lala land, that wasnt even my point lol.

Perhaps you should provide more clarity.

You think they will leave a message hey forum to much ads, they will leave! I was giving you friendly feedback on your possible and positive venture that could succeed, but its all about who running it.

In the *communities* which I have created the members are involved. Many of the users are establishing themselves to become Moderators. The feedback I receive in these communities is both positive and negative. I am responsive to the feedback, and the community sees this and knows it is a worthwhile investment of their time and energy to stay and help build.

I agree with your statement about who is running a community has a huge impact on the success of the community. However, part of the experiment in this project is for me to refine what works and what does not work. As I have mentioned in other posts within this thread, there has been some attrition of sites due to inactivity. Were those failures my fault? I have looked into this, and my conclusion is that it was a combination of weak topics, poor target marketing (my fault), and poor focus (my fault). Had I a single forum to direct my energy towards, it is possible some of the forums that have failed thus far may have thrived. We will never know though. Given the circumstances of this project, the weaker forums have fallen while others have risen and appear to be on a growth track.

Also something I have mentioned, there are already spin-off projects from this project which may turn out to be monetarily profitable. Time will tell on these as well.

I am not looking forward to when my forums are so large my users can just roam the forums to talk shit, but I guess this is one of the "joys" of growth.

1. Do not use MyBB - there is a reason there are next to no successful sites on this outdated, shitty platform (it's not 2002 and users hate it).
2. Don't use Adsense on forums - you'd be much better off looking at CPA offers for your niche. Adsense is never the way for forums.

How many of your forums are you still maintaining from the initial 50?

Best of luck!

1. Do not use MyBB - there is a reason there are next to no successful sites on this outdated, shitty platform (it's not 2002 and users hate it).

I have actually migrated all of the forums using MyBB to phpBB. That was a painful process, but it seems worthwhile.

2. Don't use Adsense on forums - you'd be much better off looking at CPA offers for your niche. Adsense is never the way for forums.

I am using a mixture of advertising. As I just mentioned in this post, I have migrated all of the forums using MyBB over to phpBB. Within phpBB is a decent advertising extension which allows me to show code in a given banner space. I can create multiple advertisements and the forum cycles through them. I can also place priorities to each advertisement. So, if I want a forum to show more of one ad I can increase it's priority, and the same is true to show less of a specific ad campaign by lowering the priority.

I have not seen a huge impact on performance from AdSense, and since it is unique to the viewer I have found it to provide a higher usability. AdSense mixed with my other more targeted and forum related advertisements allows for a nice mixture of ads.

How many of your forums are you still maintaining from the initial 50?

All of the forums are still up and available, however, I am only working on around 40 of them as of today. So, ten of them are essentially abandoned. On those abandoned forums I am still getting traffic, but no memberships. My guess is some of the threads are of interest, but not enough to hold a community together. I actually played with the idea of creating new forums that are more targeted to the threads with traffic but I have yet to take action on that.

Best of luck!

Thank you!

I have added a targeted forum to the mix. This included six or nine domains added (I do not remember how many I bought for it). The interesting thing about this new forum is that it has a lot of potential to reach "non-forum" types. The reason I added this forum was because I heard other people, IRL, talking about how they wished such a forum existed. I gave it some thought, looked into the market, and saw there actually are a lot of competitors however they seem to be poorly run. So, we shall see.

As for the remaining 40 +/- forums, they are very good at attracting spammers, but are slowly growing organically as well. I am leaving the ten or so abandoned forums out there as maybe one day they will find their own. If they do, great. Maybe when it is time to renew the domains I will re-evaluate each of them.

I am becoming a sucker for starting forums. I purchased a few more domains and started yet another forum.

Spammers are getting trickier. So far, requiring new users to be moderated is slowing them down. I did have to also move all "inactive" accounts into the new user group.

Fun fun fun.
