Hello BHW,
I just set up a new account to offer freelance web scraping/ data extraction services on the Fivverr platform. I plan on advertising on Craigslist soon. Should I only go for my local area only as they require? Any other platforms I should look into to pull clients in? I need to keep the budget small for now. I don't need a ton of clients right away just the first few. Another idea was to use a list of the Data Brokers I obtained from a govt website to use for prospective clients. Lastly, I have a dataset of 600+ records dealing with prices and ratings for new and used cars I've extracted. I am considering reaching out to local auto dealers to see if they would like to purchase the data or are in need of the service. Any ideas/insight?

Promoting web scraping on Craigslist is crazy. I'd stay focused on Fivver and UpWork.

Showcase your skill on Youtube and linkback to your fiverr gig.

As a new seller, you won't get much traffic from Fiverr.

I don't think many people are looking for such high tech services in craigslist if any at all. You can look for clients in linkedin, quora and probably niche forums. But a portfolio is a must! So get yourself a nice one showing all your skills, projects and create content to show people how your skills could be beneficial for anyone.

Maybe I am a lil' crazy my dude. I don't want to waste time in a race to the bottom bidding on UpWork as this time. I have the Fivver setup now I just need to generate traffic. I read about using CL on an advice blog for freelance webdev. I know it may not be a good fit for this specialized service but at five dollars it's not a huge investment. What is an alternative to generate traffic for 5 bucks?

I like this idea. It is a niche type of service that the average Joe doesn't need. My portfolio is a collection of databases I've scraped from the web. I have to admit that they are not very sexy. I think the analytics I could run on the data would be more appealing, especially with data visualizations. Need to find the ones that have insatiable hunger for data. On the bright side there is a digital gold rush to feed AI models on vast amounts of data.

This is a pretty good idea. It would be a lot of time spent making the tutorials, but as they say the ones getting rich in the gold rush are selling the shovels. Thanks for all the valuable insight.

Yes, Agree with you mate. Deciding a niche is important but much more important is being in the right place. So Being in the right place with quality work and services means a lot to you mate...

Please, use multiquote, OP
And about your thread, I would suggest you to create some articles on Medium.
Articles with keywords related to your gig, and then, put your gig link to solve a problem related to your service

Yea I mean, if you don't get sales, at least you can grow an audience on Youtube, and audience = money.

Hey Wave, I have a small project that I need scraping for. I am looking at a password protected course that I would like to have scraped for all of the URLs behind the login. Would that be something you'd be able / interested in doing? lmk.

Why do you need to pull in clients from external sources? The whole point of a marketplace is to send you traffic for free. I would suggest you invest your time in delivering top notch service (even offer significant discount for the first few clients) so you can build yourself directly through Fiverr. The experience will be more authentic and it will reflect better.

I am mainly focused on scraping public websites. Have you checked into the legality of this? Did you pay to get access?

Yeah, I would suggest that you do the actual outreach to local auto dealers or hire a virtual assistant to do it for you.

The great thing about hiring a virtual from places like Fiverr or Cognoplus is that you have somebody whose job it is to find you leads and to contact those leads.

So the key here is to minimize your cost as much as possible.

With Fiverr, it can be very tricky because people will charge you based on time.

Quota-based platforms like Cognoplus charge you based on results.

You pay them based on how much they've sent out, and they have to prove it to you.
