Do exact matches not help very much?

My website’s pages are indexed (they show up when I Google “site:[domain]”), but the pages don’t rank for queries of the pages’ exact titles (without quotation marks). If I search the titles surrounded in quotation marks, my pages are the only ones that show up, which means that no one else used these titles/headlines.

How important are exact matches to the Google algorithm? Is it supposed to be really hard to rank even for exact matches? I was under the (probably wrong) impression that it wouldn’t be very difficult to show up on page #1 for a search of a unique long phrase that only your page has the exact match for.

that used to be working pretty well a couple years back in time,
recently google is prioritizing authority, you can get totally niche/language irrelevant pages in the SERPs for any search terms,

i've seen pages showing in the SERPs with totally irrelevant content/purpose and has nothing to do with the search queries,
it's still easier to rank for easy keywords but if your domain is new & sandboxed it will be much harder than it was,

you have either to build your domain authority overtime & give it more time to gain enough of it,
or you can use parasites as they usually get these already and could be used to drive the traffic to your website (depending in the search intent tho)

Topical authority , this is what's missing. Your website has to have that in Google's eyes. Then you can rank with exact and broad match keywords

Exact matches hold less value now in the modern SEO than they used to. They can still be a factor for low competition keywords , but the Google's algorithm is very complex now. It now considers various on-page and off-page factors, including the content quality, overall authority and user behavior.

Google penalised EMDs years ago. That ship has sailed. EMDs are basically worthless these days.

nope, they're still working for many cases,
yet, they'll do the work only for easy niche/keywords, you can rely only on EMDs for any competitive ones

EDMs are still working very well in terms of local websites. For example, I'm in australia and domains like keywordcity.com.au works very well. It is like an instant hack to rank on first page with little efforts in link building

You will most likely rank for those Exact terms if they are super easy and not much competition exist. Just give that page a few backlinks from High DA sites like medium, payhip and build some community discussion backlinks and wait for 7-10 days... You should see some positive impact!

Exact match anchors can be useful if they are less competitive and not over optimized, various factors involves while building links you can always diversify the anchors to get organic traffic. Focusing on exact match alone with few articles and sharing them will not be helpful.

In 2010-14 what you're doing was almost a guaranteed way to rank, but when people began to abuse it Google needed to get smarter.

What it did was develop semantic/contextual links between words and phrases. (Knowledge Graph)

There's some evidence that it does this by looking at things like the text in anchor links pointing to websites, the frequency of other phrases that appear on similar pages, and tracking user behaviours to see what webpages people click (and how quickly they hit the back button).

In short, they're optimising for a high quality user experience.

So having the phrase in the webpage title tags is okay and might even be helpful in some cases - but if someone else has a website/webpage that Google believes is a higher quality user experience for someone searching for a particular keyword, their website/page will outrank yours.

If you want to see what Google thinks your website is about, a quick and imperfect way to do it is to open up your Google Ads account, go to your Keyword Planner, and ask it to suggest keywords for your website.

Do the same thing for some of your competitors who are outranking you.

What do you see when you compare them?

These lists that you have are then a good starting point for additional content to create, and additional types of websites to seek links from.

I think it's important, but only as a requirement because to appear in SERP, backlinks are more important.

Exact matches can help, but ranking well involves more than just having a unique title. Factors like site authority, content quality, on-page optimization, and technical issues play significant roles. Even with a unique title, your page might not rank well if other factors aren’t optimized.

It may help. But google prefers quality and relevance. Make sure your page is optimized with relevant keywords, meta tags and content should be user intent. Pages from sites with more authority and quality backlinks tend to rank higher.
