How important is a .com domain in 2024?

.com is the industry standard, so it's a no-brainer to choose it. But you might also want to consider extensions that match your business. For example, Tim Ferris's blog is hosted at Tim.blog, and it gets a lot of traffic. Naval's site is hosted at nav.al.

tech companies use .io, .ai
cryppto - .eth, .xyz (super cheap btw)
saas - .so, .co

I'd focus on how the domain matches my business first, then consider the first registration and renewals.

Sounds like a wise decision dude. I try to think deeper, why here example: tim.blog get's so much traffic (OK, he is famous) and a lot of other people say google punishing .blog domains? Makes no sense for me.

The same with xyz domains a lot of them got fast high rankings , fast page indexing (google) etc,etc....and the com domain goes slow and slow.......xyz has a fast DNS speed, others not.... With xyz domain or other today you need all three email security: spf, dkim and dmarc.....what a complicated world of tech today....

You know of my postings here in BHW I think deep a lot (maybe too much, hahahaha) try to find a hidden gem, a secret (how I should explain it...)

While "ranking lower in search" may not be the case, that is also not your only problem when you don't have the .com
Won't your customer keep going to the .com and does .com have a competing product? It'll be an eternal branding issue.

You say you'll buy it down the road, how can you be confident that you will be able to? If your are so certain then buy it right now.

Choose another name. If you do not have the .com, and customers would expect you to, then you don't have a domain.

So I'm going to launch a cybersecurity website and have a cool ass name, however the .com is very expensive.

There are other TLDs with the same domain name but if using .com is more worth while I know I'll just switch to that later on down the line.

To anyone who is knowledgeable about this, what are the benefits of having a .com domain compared to a .net or .info? I'd like to stay away from the .co.uk TLD because I don't want to limit myself to one region.

I know I can always just buy the domain and redirect down the line, I'd just like to know if not using a .com domain will rank my website lower in seach.

Thanks :)
You should consider going with .com even though it is expensive. In the long run, it will give more returns as it increases trust among the visitors.

Buy in this order .com , .net, .org , .io, .Co
Nothing changes as far as .com preferred over others in 2024 compared to 2023.
Avoid .info looks spammy for any long term project.
Consider you buy anything accept. Com to save money and then your competitor takes. Com and redirects it to his site. So, never compromise on basic stuff.

Why would you competitor buys .com and not you?
Also thats not the end of it. Thats domain squatting, illegal in most countries. You can seize/suspend the .com by directly contacting the registrar, take down via complain to the hosting coumpany, DMCA, lots of legal options.

Interesting statement someone has my short 5 letter lastname as .com domain (a few years old) registrar is tucodomains.com with an tieredaccess.com/contact email ....

That's my name can proof it via my personal ident card (germany) can I have that domain without buying any sum of money, because domain squatting is illegal? Which legal options I have ?

You have no rights to a domain just because it matches your personal name. You would have to register a trademark in the USA and/or EU. Trademarks are registered for one or several distinct economic sectors. Each sector costs a few hundred $, so it is not very expensive. One you have the trademark granted only then you have a chance to demand the domain not be used in the sector you have a trademark for. However having the domain handed out to you is still not guaranteed at all. For instance, the entity using it might have a trademark for the name in another sector, and if he uses that name in that sector you cannot do anything about it even though you have a trademark in another sector.

I am not sure how likely it is to have the same trademark held by different parties for different sectors.

At least that is my understanding IANAL (I am not a lawyer)

Thank you for that tip, I gues it's in usa the same or similar as in europe, the first who register a trademark wins. That means my name as trademark must be older than the registered parked domain.

But I have read on the web there must be not so public known loopholes (more for people with money) they can claim any registered domain. I don't know how this works. Normal and usual in the life of business you have a product or multiple good products, you give them a name- here you register a trademark for the products, not for your business name , your business name you can have registered with an corp. or an LLC and then us ethat registered business (company) name with your domain, this is more usual.

My short 5 letter lastname is available as domain with; site, online, life, live , org(!) , io, ai,top, pro, one, cloud, host, blog the only good option here would be the .org ! domain .site or news is okay too (I build my coaching site with a twist- one poart is more like content news, the other part is my coaching service...)

I always use .com when the end users are not tech-savvy, to avoid confusion with unfamiliar extensions. However, in your case, the users are likely familiar with various extensions, so you can confidently use .net, .org, and others like .io, .agency, and .website. Just as you would avoid country-specific extensions, it's also wise to steer clear of extensions that might seem cheap or spammy, such as .info, .cc, .co, .me, .pw, and .xyz. Hope it helps.

Pretty important than other new TLDs. As other mentioned, for tech companies .io is good option.

But I like the xyz hence it's taken with my short lastname (!) by tucowsdomains.com, a shady fraudy company like the godaddyfokkers?

.com domains are usually the most desirable choice due to their brand recognition and traffic advantages, which has an indirect positive impact on SEO. If .com is too expensive, .net is a good alternative, but .info may be less so. Although Google does not prefer a specific TLD, .com is more likely to attract users to click, thereby improving rankings.

Often I see on many registrars, the .net domain cost more than a .com domain.

i think still google love .com domain instead of other tld , yes but premium tlds not included in it

Yes I would say you will stand out in the serp with a .me, or .blog domain or .news, .coaching but it looks like that google likes more .com, .net and org domains
