So I'm going to launch a cybersecurity website and have a cool ass name, however the .com is very expensive.

There are other TLDs with the same domain name but if using .com is more worth while I know I'll just switch to that later on down the line.

To anyone who is knowledgeable about this, what are the benefits of having a .com domain compared to a .net or .info? I'd like to stay away from the .co.uk TLD because I don't want to limit myself to one region.

I know I can always just buy the domain and redirect down the line, I'd just like to know if not using a .com domain will rank my website lower in seach.

Thanks :)

Buy in this order .com , .net, .org , .io, .Co
Nothing changes as far as .com preferred over others in 2024 compared to 2023.
Avoid .info looks spammy for any long term project.

I don't think there's anything hinting at that being the case. Other TLDs should have the same ranking ability given they're all fresh domains. For cybersec related services I'd second getting an .io domain or maybe .net

It's the best option, but it won't kill or make your business. And when it comes to SEO, it matters even less. It matters more as brand making.

Still significant for credibility and familiarity, but alternatives like .io gain traction.

Define expensive?
Like a few hundred dollars or we talking about a few thousand dollar worth?
If its a few hundred, you would best either taking the .com or finding a totally different name.
If it's a few thousand, then it's fine going with a different tld like .net
However, .com is always preferred choice if it is available.
Always remember, if you skip the .com, someone could come snag up the .com and attempt to try take over your visitors.

I bought a .net for a domain, and I'm happy with it, I know a few sites that are .net too, that's the reason why I picked it, the .com isn't available easy, and its a generic title, so there wont be any competition for the name and content I don't think. Its obvious what the .net is and isn't. I don't plan to keep buying many more, but since its taken, and I'm getting old I thought better buy it quick, and get busy rather than wait! lol

By 2024, .com domain would still have an incredible influence as a result of its being trusted and is very widely known. Usual cue, in most cases, is this very domain that users can recognize easily and thus may result in a greater percentage of clicks through. Nevertheless, search engines do not differ in terms of the SEO treatment of different top-level domains (TLDs), meaning that you do not gain prior positioning advantages just by having the .com.

The benefits of a .com domain over others like .net or .info include:

- Higher memorability: An average user will probably find it hard to assume whether a site has the ending .com or something else.

- Greater trust: .com as the top domain, is the most trusted TLD, with .co second, when it comes to popularity.

- Brand credibility: .com tops the list of the most trusted domain names and is hence more likely to improve brand credibility.

.com's benefit will be the provision of a more internationally appealing approach as a response in case you are concerned with the region's limitations. Although a .com is not a de facto ranking signal, the immediate benefits of increased trust, brand, and a large number of impressions justify the effort. Failing unity of the cost, one can begin with another TLD and redirect later to achieve the goal. Just be happy to pick a domain name, that matches your brand's image but don't go for a name that could one day might limit your growth opportunities ahead.

.com is still KING in 2024. Go for an alternative extension if your .com first choice is unavailable, only if you don’t have a second choice .com name.

I think .com builds a credibility among the major audience, I think if you want start a company better go with .com , it will create a premium image to your customers.

Advertising is easier. If you tell someone that you have started xyz site most people when you ask them to search they will search xyz[.]com instead of .net or anything else.

Happy sunday to you here !

Ok, now I break a little com domain rule here....
The most controversial domain extension sure is xyz.
But based on my recherche it seems like it ranks fast and high, your page indexing is faster as with a com domain.

Some people claim page indexing today is boring slow in com domains and google is punishing .blog domains (???)
You will be shocked out there in the web space, there are enough serious business sites who using a xyz domain.

But it can happen that email hositng will not work or your FB ads willnot work with an xyz email address. You need a good email hosting with high advanced security DNS settings to make it work. Also these skim, dkim things etc,etc....

And a new tld domain .ceo has high renewal prices too.
