I began a project to build a single successful online forum community, with as close to zero funding as possible.

After looking at this from as many angles as I could, within reason, I decided to build a small army (maybe a platoon or company) of online forums with the hopes that at least one of them is successful.

As I am not picky on the topics, so long as they are topics in which I consider myself knowledgeable. I do not want to start a forum about laser communications in space when I know mostly nothing about this topic. I would much rather prefer topics to which I can intelligently speak. With this in mind, I made a list of topics I believe I know. This was a rather humbling process. When you are up against brutal honesty face-to-face it is surprising how much we actually do not know, at least this was my case. So, I made my list.

Once I had my list I went domain shopping. I bought at least 6 to 12 domains per topic. This is where all of my monies went, other than hosting.

Armed with topics, and domains, I began to test forum software options. I found that I liked two free forum software solutions, but for different types of forums. I liked Flarum and MyBB. I would have probably gone the XenForo path, but that costs money. Both Flarum and MyBB have fairly active development communities associated with them, and they have a basic feel to them that makes sense. As I mentioned, I learned that these two produce different styles of forums.

Knowing that I will use either Flarum or MyBB forum software it was time to start launching forums into the wild wild web. That was fairly easy, and as an afterthought I should have kept better notes so I could share with others how to quickly go from zero to public ready forum. By the time I had launched half a dozen forums I was able to get forums up in around an hour. The most time consuming portions of the launches have been graphic design, initial content, and forum structuring (BHW has Marketplace with sub forums, Making Money with subs, et cetera).

With a decent horde of forums now out in the wild I am in the process of populating them with posts, as well as finding where their target audiences exist. This is a slow process. I think of it like a large steam locomotive just starting to move. Before it moves there is a lot of work designing the train, building the train, deciding where the track will lead, laying the track, putting all this together, and eventually getting the engines hot enough to generate motion. Well, right now, anyone looking can see the steam but the wheels are not quite moving yet. Once there is motion, it will be gradual, and powerful. (#trainanalogies)

Something worth mentioning is that I am currently not monetizing any of these forums. I have tested where advertisements could be placed, but I have not executed on that. I have explored membership fee options

I do not know how often I will post here, but the goal is to keep this thread somewhat up to date. Also, I am not keen on sharing analytics data quite yet, mostly because everyone knows what single and double digits look like.

Sitemaps

I have checklists and I still forgot to include a sitemap.xml file for several of the forums. Now I have the sitemap.xml files being automatically generated every hour to ensure it is up-to-date.

The only reason I realized my mistake was when I was looking at the site on ubersuggest it showed an error related to sitemaps and I new right away I had skipped them. Once I realized this I immediately created the files, then jumped into g search console and added them there as well.

This should help.

Facebook Groups Mentions

When a post about one of my forums is made inside of a Facebook Group there seems to be a spike in traffic to my site(s) for around 24 hours. I have chosen FB Groups that are related to the forum topics so the interest should be genuine. A lot of FB Groups discourage or simply ban self-promotion of outside sites, so it is a little tricky sometimes to sneak them in, but it is possible.

My guess is resolving the sitemap.xml issue is to credit here, but I am seeing better placement within Google SERPs. DuckDuckGo.com is still my friend as well.

Something I may try next is to see how I can inject links to me from the current results. So, if XYZ.tld is the #1 result, and it is a forum, can I create an account on that forum and post a link to my forum, and even if I did do this, would that benefit me at all? If XYZ.tld is not a forum, first that would be humiliating, but second can I somehow put my name on their site, and would this help me? I believe it would help me, but I do not see this as a holy grail type of move.

Reddit Mentions

When a post about one of my forums is made inside of Reddit there is a spike in traffic to that site, but not as large of a spike as when a mention is made within a FB Group.

I have not moved forward with injecting links into the top SERPs. Instead I have been adding content throughout the forums.

Building content within the forums has proven to be the most useful strategy I have found so far. In the forums that I am not adding content, they look like abandoned sites and I can see what little traffic they are getting bounce. In the forums where I am adding content, they look alive, and growing to both humans and search engines. An alive community is much more enticing for my target audience.

Now for the "black hat" portion of this ... deception ...

I have had the best results when I create a bunch of fake users and post as those users. To do this, I fire up Tor, and choose specific exit nodes for specific users. For instance, User A always exits Tor in Spain, and User B always exits Tor in France, and User C in California, et cetera. Using what I know from managing personas I keep each user persona consistent and post accordingly. This also forces me to post as specific users at specific times as they are allegedly spread across multiple time zones. (This is the most annoying part of this, but I have a pretty tight grasp of my calendar so it is just another event in my list of things to do.) When I post as me, or as an admin, I use whatever my actual public IP address is and make no efforts to hide myself or to abide by a specific schedule.

It does not escape me that Google does not care where my forum members are located. They should not be able to see their IP addresses. However, it looks a lot more crisp if the time stamps have a logical flow based on the users. This is to say, humans can see if there are irregularities.

I am still planning to do some link injection in the future.

Injected around 12 links into the top SERPs. I am not sure if this alone helped my ranking with the G oracle, as I have also been adding content like it matters. My ranking is creeping up.

In some of the industries I am targeting I am up against sites that have been around for 20+ years. These ancient sites tend to be garbage but they have such weight with them they are the heavyweight champions for the #1 slot ... for now.

My personas are still in motion.

I am getting organic membership growth for a a couple of my forums, which is promising.

I do not want to spam Reddit too hard, so I have laid off of doing so for a while.

Something new I am in the process of doing is contacting industry members directly from their websites and letting them know about my forum(s). For instance, if one of my forums is about gardening vegetables, then I will search for any business that has to do with gardening vegetables and send them an email with a quick pitch, as well as a PDF they can print if they want to promote my forum(s) in their own communities. The PDF includes a QR code that takes them straight to whichever forum it is about. The little testing I have done with this seems to have a high membership increase rate, so this looks like it may be a winner. We shall see.

Best of luck for your journey!
You should consider xenforo instead of mybb, it has more features, addons, etc...

Many forum sites that I find to be of high quality generally use vBulletin. You should take a look at it. Keep us updated about your journey.

Understood, but as this is an effort to start with minimal expenses I did not see investing $140 x around 50 sites as a good move. Most of the forums are going to fail. This is why I am throwing so many out there, to knock out the failures and allow the one or two wins to exist.

I also did not want to do any cloud software licensing.

MyBB is *FREE*, relatively maintained, has a somewhat active community, and is easy to manage from an admin's perspective. If Xenforo had a free community edition that would be cool, but that does not seem to be in the horizon.

Thank you.

Not even a nod towards Xenforo?

vBulletin, at $179 + addons, costs more than Xenforo, which is currently $140.

This project is comprised of a lot of domains and forums. I have around 50 forums running ATM. To pay $179 for 50 forums would cost approximately $8,950. To pay $140 for 50 forums would cost approximately $7,000. These amounts are insignificant for a business, especially as a startup project. However, one of the primary goals is to get at least one successful forum up by only spending the minimum amount possible. I understand that buying a few hundred domains is not free. My primary expense has been domains. Hosting is cheaper the more domains I host as I am using an unlimited type of account that allows me to host as many domains as I can manage. Then, add my blood sweat and tears to the costs, ore more realistically, my time, this is not a zero cost venture. With all of that in mind, if I am successful in this project it would not be too difficult for someone to mimic my efforts, scrape together $3,000 to $4,000, churn out content like a champ, and eventually monetize the network of forums that remain.

In what CMS is your fórum built?

I planned to create a forum earlier, but its not possible to get any good revenue from such business as people would like to stick with the old reputed forums where the buzz makes most. And there are some other challenges as well. But still we like to dream, so good luck for your journey!

competing with BHW?XDD

LOL, nope.

I do not currently have any forums operating in the same fields as BHW. I do not know anything about the owners/operators of BHW, so if they have other ventures there may be some crossover, but if it is making money I am happy to be the small fish.

In my country, there is a very famous forum with various topics, but there is a special section where one can discuss brothels or places to find girls, and so on. The thing is, that forum was sold a few years ago, and if I'm not mistaken, it was sold for $250,000. The forum receives a lot of traffic from the country itself and from sex tourism. You could try doing something similar for your country.

Did you read the thread?

I am using Flarum and MyBB. (Remember, I have a bunch of individual forums running.)
Well , bro if you need help , I can help you on that , for free of course

Since starting this project I have connected with a few other forum owners. The responses they are giving me is that there are still a plethora of untapped communities ripe for forums. I do agree that the older more established forums have deep roots, but two other forum owners that I have chatted with and my own experience tell me that even deeply rooted forums can be ousted by an outlier.

For example, in one of my niches the forum has an ancient dominating forum that is massive. It was not my intention to dethrone them ... until I saw that it may be possible to do so if I just maintain my course. As I slid up the SERPs and am now ranking a solid 4th, and as I study this ancient forum looking for weaknesses, I am pretty sure I can replace them as #1. If I can do that, then I will continue my push in that niche until that entire industry has no choice but to move into my forum. Already, I am seeing new members that also have accounts in the old forum. I estimate their income to be between $150k and $300k per month. They are not even paying attention to me and my $60 forum.

I am not interested in delving into the sex industry, especially as that would be so far off topic for all of my current forums. The most I would consider is domain flipping, but even there I have other areas of focus.

I appreciate it. I actually have a staff that could be doing this, but this is a pet project of mine. If it works out I will most likely just put one or two in charge of the project and move on to whatever is next. Thank you again.

There are nulled versions of all xenforo versions as well ;)

I've been using one for years back in 2017+- and never had a problem
