There had been 2 or 3 updates after the may update and one of these might be favoring your site. That is why it regained rankings.

I've had one of my sites that got hit by the May update recover but it hasn't fully gotten back to its former traffic level.
The May update was nasty, but I noticed that it had the biggest effect on overly keyword-focused content.
A lot of my newer projects focus on themes and context and they're doing better and better with each passing month.
