Hey BHW, I hope you’re having a wonderful start to the week.

I’ve been a long-time lurker on this forum. Thanks to the guides and journeys in this place, I’ve managed to gain knowledge and skills that landed me multiple jobs and gigs in the past. I now feel it is time to provide some value back to the community.

This will be a bit of a lengthy thread, but I want to share as many details with you as possible.

I hope you guys and girls will find something useful in this journey.

About me:

I’m a guy from the Balkans, an art fanatic who recently turned 27, with the ultimate ambition to focus entirely on film and photography 10 years from now. I’m not naive to expect I’ll become a millionaire doing art, so I’ve spent my 20s doing media buying and growth hacking to get there first, and then relocate the wealth on long-term investments and my previously mentioned ambition.
For the past 2 years, I worked for a PPC company but finally decided to leave the job and start my own project with my current business partner. I’m starting this journey so we can track our progress and feel more motivated to meet our goals in time, as well as provide some value back to the community that gave us so much in the past.

The Project:

We’ll be using the mother-slave method on Ig to bring people to our Shopify store, convert them into customers and eventually build a brand.

The setup consists of hundreds of slave accounts, each doing around 150 follow actions at their full potential. Our slave accounts are profiled to look like regular people, depending on the niche of the store and the audience that we want to target. For example, say we want to have a cat store - then the profiles would have a bio of a cat owner, a profile picture with a cat, or a faceless person with a cat, the feed will have images of cats and we’ll repost stories from cat-relevant profiles to simulate real-person activity. You get the gist.

The slave accounts scrape the most recent followers of niche-relevant profiles with 5.000-100.000 followers. We try to avoid big profiles since they tend to have tons of bot followers. We manually search and verify the source profiles (the profiles whose followers we scrape) and currently have a list of thousands of niched sources totaling something shy of 100.000.000 followers. It was a tedious task, but from our own experience, it is inevitable to do it.

Once the people our slaves followed follow them back, the slaves reach out to them with customized spintaxed DMs. Since these people already followed our slave accounts, our DMs end up in their primary inbox, not in requests. In the DMs, we funnel them to the official Ig profile of our e-commerce brand, promising them an exclusive offer available only for the people referred by our slaves.

We then wait for people to message us on our main profile and give them the code for the offer that the slave account has promised them.

It’s important to note that since we are actually trying to build a brand, we try to avoid spamming people in any of the steps above. We don’t send messages to non-followers, we send personalized messages relevant to the users’ interests (of course, there will be exceptions here, but they comprise less than 10% of all the users that follow us back) and we answer manually and considerately to everyone that contacts us on the main profile.

The final step is to create a multichannel marketing approach while utilizing the Ig traffic as the basis. Since we’d be getting 300-400+ daily sessions on the store, out of which 10+% leave their contact information, we’ll be using Email flows (2 pre-purchase flows totaling 5 emails and 1 post-purchase flow with 2 emails), SMS flows (2 cart-abandonment SMSs) and Facebook/Instagram + Google search/GDN retargeting. If this setup proves to be successful, we’ll be adding retargetings on TikTok, Snapchat, and Pinterest.

We already proved to ourselves that this variation of the mother-slave method can work on its own and we want to see how much we can scale it with an multi-channel approach. We already launched a store with around 50 accounts a couple of weeks ago and managed to get $250 in revenue. Due to issues with audience targeting and product costs, we decided to stop that store, and start from scratch with a different, more easily targetable niche and products with much more competitive prices.

Why this method:

Considering our backgrounds, knowledge, and experiences, we considered doing PPC for testing products and niches, and building the brand, but then decided to go with this route because of the following reasons:

Most cost-efficient
I’ve managed Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok and Google campaigns totaling over $1m in combined ad spend. I found that the mother-slave method is at least 10 times cheaper than Facebook/Instagram ads, where getting a follower from a first-world country costs at least $0.2 while getting targeted followers with the mother-slave method costs us $0.02 or less. The same goes to click costs/store sessions - first-world country (US, EU) cost-per-click costs us between $0.35 - $1.15 on broad targeting in the past year (narrower targeting costs even more), while with the mother-slave method we’re getting around $0.05 per targeted click when taking into account all the setup costs. Yes, Snapchat traffic (among some others) is much cheaper, but their conversion rate is shit 99% of the time, especially after the iOS updates last year.

Real people and targeted sessions
The sessions we get are as real as they can be, and on top of all, they are genuinely interested in the content of the main profile, otherwise, they wouldn’t follow it in the first place or visit the store. If the main profile doesn't produce quality content or the website doesn’t look legit and lacks a decent offer, this method won’t do magic. We’ve seen a drastic difference in the performance when the profile didn’t look legit and once we revamped everything and put effort into creating top-notch content, the results immediately improved.

Infinitely scalable (in theory, but in reality, we're limited by the number of available profiles on Instagram)
We could be getting 10.000+ followers or website sessions per day with this method. The only things that prevent us are resources and infrastructure. If we see promising results within the first weeks/months, there’s no reason to double down on this method, either with the initial store or diversify in different niches.

Thank you very much for sharing, I have read everything but this is gold, to chew very well and understand everything, very interesting and sure to be successful, thanks again for sharing your entire process

Looks promising. Following this !
Good luck

I am 80% sure that this journey will be successful. That's the 20% part : It succeeds on a small piece first and then scales. You just started "hardcore mode/massive". Many problems will arise. When dealing with these issues rather than marketing, you may find yourself editing cookies, re-verifying accounts. I've made a similar mistake in the past.

Thanks, guys.

We just finished adding the final batch of slaves for today, finally reaching 450 running accounts, after almost a month. We'll finish today with 22.000 follows across all of them and are finally seeing DMs coming into the main account. We'll see how the next few days unfold because we'll need to optimize the spintax and the response approach for the users that reach us on the main account. I'll update you all with the results by the end of the week.

We've been running this for a long time, even at a higher scale (3k+ slaves) for clients that just want to grow their Instagram profiles and increase engagement. There was currently a wave that mostly affected the scrapers, but we found a workaround for that. The slave accounts are steadily growing, dozens of them already have 2000+ followers each. We're usually getting 5-10 phone/email verifications per day, but we haven't gotten an account banned in weeks now. Hopefully, that'll remain the same, but ban waves are not unexpected, we'll just need to remain calm and ride them out.

Hey there! Nice journey!

Tried it 4 years ago it is really promising, I am wondering qhich kind of proxies are you using to avoid account bans and all?

It's exclusively mobile proxies. Based on our own experience and the experience of other people we know who automate hundreds of accounts, datacenter and residential proxies are practically useless right now. In theory they do work, it's just the problems that you'll get with them will make you quit sooner than you get to see any results.

As for the number of accounts per proxy, in our particular case, we found the golden mean to be 19 accounts per mobile proxy, at least with our current proxy provider. Keep in mind that the number of accounts that you can run on a single mobile proxy depends on the proxy provider (since different providers have different size of pool of IPs, different countries, different IP trust score etc.). Ideally, you'd want to have your own proxy setup, which is our ultimate goal. Hopefully, we see promising results and start working on that infrastructure by the end of the year.

Sounds great! If you could pm me your proxy provider I would really apprecciate it!

also, are you facing any bans with your current msg and follow settings? And what is the average followback rate?

I decided not to share any providers or names of tools/software as part of this journey, either public or through DMs because I don't want to be seen as promoting something. The truth is, even if I give you any name of a service provider, it doesn't mean they will get you the results we get. Heck, even we don't get consistent results with the same providers. That's why we test multiple providers at any given moment and change our "main" provider at least quarterly if not even more frequently, since their quality changes or we find something better/more stable.

As for bans with our current actions, we got 0 in the past 2-3 weeks. We do get daily phone & email verifications tho, last week there was a huge wave and we had around 20 per day, but the wave seems over and we're now back at 4-5 per day. I wish I could say the same for our scrapers, those fuckers die like they've been hit by the plague. Rest their souls. Luckily, we found a workaround for that, albeit being a bit more expensive than anticipated.

Our followback ratio in the current niche is around 8.5%, but we need more time to have proper data, since numbers are currently fluctuating a lot due to us adding accounts rapidly and making dozens of changes. But most of the time, no matter the niche, the average followback ratio we get is between 8%-12%, I don't remember we had something below that. Maybe 7% on worst days and when the sources were heavily depleted.

Interest thread. I do supplement eCommerce but mainly paid ads with IG followers for brand image. Curious about which software you use to manage all those slave accounts.

So your traffic funnel is 100s of slave accounts with follow/unfollow method -> PM those who followed the slave account with your main IG page?

Good luck man! I was selling Testo ebooks at the beginning of this year with Facebook/Insta ads, we made some five figures from that alone back then. There's certainly huge potential in that niche, probably one of the biggest when it comes to men.

I can't share the software since I don't want to promote anything, but you could automate the process with any insta botting software, or even create your own if you're a good programmer. Simple searches on the forum will get you a list of the most used ones and all of them can get the job done.

The funnel is as follows:

Slave accounts follow users -> Users follow them back -> Slave accounts send DMs to the users that followed them back, introducing themselves as ambassadors of our brand and giving them a unique offer available only to them -> Users come to our main insta, tell us that the slave referred them -> We give them the code -> They go to the website and use the code

how do you verify the accounts that get hit with a phone verification?

how do you verify the accounts that get hit with a phone verification?

The accounts are created with only an email address, so they don't have a phone number attached. That means that once we are hit with a PV, we use any one-time SIM card provider (there are tons online), to get a code and verify it. We then remove the phone again and do the same in case the account is hit with another PV, however, from our experience that happens VERY rarely, unless you change the proxy provider, in which case you'll most likely be hit with a PV, or at least EV. It's crucial you use a phone number for verification from the same country as your proxy, otherwise, chances are high that your account will die (rhyme wasn't intended).

oh thanks don't know why I didn't think to remove the number after verified lol

I have been doing this since 2018:)) made a thread with same method & goal back in 2018! for sure its been hard since last API IG (july2019) decrease update, but sure still working! good luck!

Are you using an Instagram bot that you created for yourself?

What's up you guys?

It’s been exactly one week since the start of this journey.

We encountered a few problems this past week that I’ll elaborate on below, but the overall performance keeps on going up. We’re still very far from our first milestone, but we did get our first couple of sales. The feedback we’re getting from the people messaging us is also very positive, and we came up with some potential improvements that can help increase the desired metrics after we run some split tests.

Botting metrics changes from the past week:

Live slave accounts: From 322 to 433 (goal: 490 accounts)
Total follow actions: From 22.000 to 42.000 daily (goal: 80.000 actions)
Total DMs sent: From 1280 to 2440 daily (goal: 6.500 DMs)

The idea is to reach the goals on the botting side by the end of the month and we’re soundly on our way there. The issues with the Instagram ban wave (especially affecting the scrapers) seem to now be gone. We had zero bans on our slave accounts and we are not getting any temporary action blocks in the past few days, which is fantastic. Hopefully, this lull will continue for at least a few weeks, before Instagram starts causing us headaches again.

Two of the issues we encountered the past week were related to the botting process.

Problem 1:

Due to a glitch in the software, for 2.5 days the DMs that the slave accounts were sending was without any text content & only our main profile was shared. This, of course, appears very spammy and the number of people reaching out to our main Ig profile visibly dropped. Once we figured out where the problem was, we got back to the expected results. This is a quick reminder to always track data within your marketing funnel (no matter what type of marketing campaign you are running) since data is your best friend in troubleshooting issues.

Problem 2:

During the weekend, there was a problem with the proxies that the scrapers were using. This resulted in the inhibited potential of the actions that the slave accounts were doing (mainly follow actions, but also DMs). Because of this, we missed an increase of 15-25% in the number of follow actions, so instead of reaching nearly 50.000 follow actions daily, we got to 42.000 by the end of the week. This problem was also resolved and we should be back to the regular pace today.

Now, for the store metrics (29.8 - 4.9):

Sessions: 294
Sales: 2
ATC: 4.76%
Conversion rate: 0.68%
Revenue: $72.54
AOV: $36.27

The majority of our sessions come from first-world countries, with sessions from the US, UK, and Australia being responsible for more than ⅔ of the total number, which is a very positive sign.

Things that we are satisfied with:
  • AOV
  • Audience targeting
  • Customer feedback

Things that we are not satisfied with:
  • Number of sessions
  • ATC rate
  • Conversion rate

We are currently running a few split tests that are intended to improve the metrics mentioned above.

First of all, we’re getting 25+ DMs (and growing) on our main profile per day, which we greet with a personalized template that we manually tweak and send out to every potential customer. Since many of these people don’t respond to the first message we send them, we’ll be running a follow-up structure to reengage the ones who forgot about the first response we sent them. This is intended to increase the number of sessions we get in the store.

Second, we’re currently split-testing one sequence of the templated response, that now includes a CTA for an add-to-cart. We want to lead the customer deeper in the funnel before we hit them with an irresistible offer.

Finally, we’re split-testing the offer approach with the intention to increase the conversion rate. We tested the free + shipping model for a few days in the beginning but gave up on that since we wanted to develop a sustainable brand, and free + shipping doesn’t really scream legitimacy. We have since moved to a cheap pricing model, where we offer a one-time 50% off coupon code to every customer. We need yet to see how that will work, and if it’s necessary, we’ll just revert back to the free + shipping model, which is a bit scummy, but it converts better.

That’s it for now, I’ll be back next week with another update.

Happy grind.
