Attn Indians: Stop Calling People "Dear"

I don't have a personal problem when someone calls me "Dear" but there are some people that exaggerate the use of the word and it becomes annoying. And especially if you are working with foreign customers, it potentially makes a bad impression.

Indian point of view: we have 3 versions for English Word "You" in Hindi i.e. "Tu, Tum & Aap" Tu = for people younger, Tum = for contemporary and Aap = for people older and those you respect. So, respect is ingrained in our culture and psyche but its difficult to express it with same nuance in English. English may have a lot to learn from us.

Dear is a term of endearment.

en-dear-ment: a word or phrase expressing love or affection.

If you are trying to be polite or respectful that's great!

But using Dear is not the correct way of doing so.

"Hello there, how are you doing?" "I have completed your order, now is time for payment, many thanks.." these can be said without sir and dear. They aren't required. The quality of order & service will speak for itself.

For becoming informal with people a general guide you can move through -> sir/dear/bro -> mate -> bud/dude -> my man!/ my girl!!! lol

All you need to do is say "Hello" or "Hi".

There is no need for any other terms such as bro, mate, sir, dude, and dear!

As a Brit married to an American 20 years, she calls me Duck, Chuck
Dear, ive also used the term Mate many times on BHW during live
skype sales chats, ps 15 years on bhw never scammed or been scammed
and never been asked for a refund since i joined in 2007. and the only thing

I think Dear is fine, I mean if it's a sign of respect, then thanks for calling me that I guess.

But when you don't know me, and you call me Bro in every second sentence during your offer proposition, that makes me so mad I'd punch the screen. Regardless of nationality though, so many people do this and it's furiating.

It took me time to adapt to this I think 4-5 years after college.
Before that it was just important for scoring some marks.

What most people in this thread are trying to correct will take years. Communication in that type of English becomes a priority mostly when we are out of college.
So that's after around 24 years.

There are things that make us also uncomfortable.
I mean that's really bad to call someone who's elder in age by Name.
I have adapted to it since started my 1st job in 2008 but still not comfortable.

This is an international forum with all kinds of people. If what you're focusing on what offends you that much, meaning someone calling you "dear' rather than how their work and how they are as a business person, then I don't know what to say. Worry about the bigger things in life.

Besides the four walls where we all work, it's a big world out there.
