Do you feel sad or depressed for no apparent reason? Do you have trouble sleeping or concentrating? Does it take a long time before you get out of bed in the morning? Are your relationships suffering because of this sadness? If so, then I would strongly advise taking action now by following the steps below on how to cure depression.
What Is Depression?
The word "depression" comes from an old French term meaning 'to sink' which aptly describes what happens when we are depressed. It's as if our life energy has been sucked out of us and replaced with negative thoughts and feelings. The good news is that this feeling can easily be reversed through certain techniques...
People who suffer from clinical depression often complain about feelings of hopelessness, fatigue, loss of appetite, difficulty sleeping, excessive crying, lack of concentration, low self-esteem, suicidal tendencies, etc. These symptoms may seem overwhelming at first, but they are all part of the same underlying problem - a sense of worthlessness, helplessness and pessimism.
It is important to remember that depression is not a sign of weakness and should never be considered as such. In fact, many people suffering from severe forms of depression go on to become leaders in their respective fields. They manage to achieve success despite having these significant problems.
So why do people become depressed? There are several reasons, including bereavement, grief, divorce, relationship breakups, financial difficulties, unemployment, illness, loss of loved ones, loneliness, poor health, etc. In addition, there are external factors like environmental pollution, food additives, harmful chemicals found in plastics and other consumer products, emotional trauma, stress, etc.
If you find yourself struggling with these issues, the best thing to do is talk to your doctor about them. He/she will be able to help determine whether you need additional medication and treatment. However, you should also consider seeking professional advice on how to cure depression.
How To Cope With Depressive Feelings And Thoughts
In order to overcome depression, you must learn new ways of thinking and behave. You need to adopt healthy habits and change your lifestyle in order to improve your overall well-being. Here are three simple strategies on how to cope with depressive feelings and thoughts.
1) Learn more about what causes depression and its effects. Knowledge is power and will give you confidence and clarity on how to deal with your situation effectively. Education is one of the most effective methods of coping with depression. Reading books, watching educational videos and listening to audio programs are great tools to start learning about depression.
2) Exercise regularly. Regular physical exercise releases endorphins into your brain, giving you a natural high. Endorphins are neurotransmitters (hormones produced naturally within the body), which promote positive emotions, reduce pain and anxiety, cause relaxation, improve mood and sleep quality, etc. By exercising, you'll release endorphins into your bloodstream and thus experience better mental health.
3) Take care of your diet. Certain foods contain chemical compounds called phytochemicals which are known to fight cancer, heart disease, diabetes, etc. Examples include broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, kale, garlic, onions, potatoes, green beans, oranges, papayas, strawberries, tomatoes, avocados, nuts, legumes, fish, and dark leafy greens. Other beneficial nutrients include vitamin B6, vitamin E, selenium, zinc, omega 3 fatty acids, beta-carotene, folate, fiber, water, caffeine, and resveratrol. Also avoid eating refined sugars, fried foods, alcohol, tobacco, saturated fats, processed meats, fast foods, etc.
Mindfulness Meditation For Depression
Meditation is a practice whereby you focus on something meaningful while clearing your mind of any distracting thoughts. It helps calm down your mind and relax your body. Mindful meditation has been shown to relieve anxiety, lower blood pressure, increase happiness levels, etc.
Here are two simple mindfulness meditations to try:
1) Sit comfortably upright with your spine straight. Place both feet flat on the floor. Close your eyes and breathe calmly and slowly through your nose. Now imagine placing a string between your eyebrows and pulling upwards gently towards the sky. Continue breathing normally through your mouth while doing this. Hold the imagined tension until you begin to notice your breath slowing down. When your breathing becomes slower than usual, let the imaginary string drop downwards again. Repeat this process over and over again. Once you've completed 10 minutes of this activity, you can open your eyes.
2) Sit comfortably upright with your back straight. Keep your hands relaxed palms up on your thighs. Slowly close your eyes, count to ten silently without opening them again. After counting, inhale deeply through your nose and exhale slowly through your mouth. Again, continue this process quietly until you reach the point where you're comfortable falling asleep. Then keep your eyes closed and count backwards silently from 100. Count each number off aloud until you return to 1. As you count backwards, concentrate solely on your breath going in and out. Once you've counted backward from 100, you can open your eyes.
Other Tips On How To Cure Depression
There are several other things you can do to help ease your depression:
* Get enough sleep. Adequate sleep allows your immune system to function properly, making you healthier overall. Sleep deprivation leads to irritability, memory impairment, lowered resistance to infection, slowed metabolism, compromised immunity, etc. So make sure you're getting 7-9 hours of sound sleep every night.
* Eat right. Avoid junk foods and overeat fresh fruits and vegetables. Include whole grains, lean protein, complex carbohydrates, and healthy fat sources in your daily meals. Omega 3 fatty acids, magnesium, calcium, iron, potassium, and vitamins A, D, & B12 found in various veggies are essential for strong bones, teeth, muscles, nerves, skin, hair, nails, etc.
* Drink plenty of fluids. Water is vital for life and provides necessary nourishment for your cells. Dehydration makes you tired, weakens your immune system and slows down digestion, leading to weight gain. Your daily intake should consist mainly of water. Make sure you drink at least 8 glasses per day to stay hydrated and energized.
* Manage stress. Most people don't realize that chronic stress actually triggers the production of cortisol, a hormone responsible for increased levels of sugar in the blood stream. Therefore, managing stress is very important in controlling sugar cravings. Try deep breathing exercises, yoga poses, meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, journaling, walking, stretching, etc.
* Laugh! Laughter is the best medicine for reducing depression. Find humorous movies to watch, read funny stories, listen to music, play games, etc. Remember, laughter is contagious and will boost your mood faster than anything else.
* Have fun. Enjoy the simple pleasures in life. Go outside, spend time with family and friends, take walks, enjoy hobbies, travel, etc.
* Spend time with nature. Nature offers numerous healing properties such as restorative oxygen therapy, hydrotherapy, therapeutic mud baths, massages, spa treatments, etc.
* Take supplements. Some studies show that supplementation with antioxidants, minerals, and herbs like St John's wort have proven helpful in relieving mild to moderate depression. But please consult your physician before adding any supplement to your routine.
* Use massage therapy. Massage therapy uses gentle strokes to stimulate circulation throughout the body. It improves lymphatic drainage, aids detoxification, reduces inflammation and swelling, increases flexibility, lowers blood pressure, relieves tight muscles, enhances range of motion, strengthens bone density, etc.
These are just some basic tips on how to cure depression. Please note that everyone responds differently to different types of therapies. While one person finds yoga relaxing, another may find it stressful instead. Everyone needs to experiment with different activities and approaches until he/she finds his/her own style.
Remember that knowledge is key and you always have control over your choices. Always seek medical assistance if needed. Don't hesitate to speak to someone if you have suicidal thoughts. Know where to turn in case you ever face major depression again.
And remember, even though it might be hard, you are not alone! Thousands of others have experienced similar struggles and overcame difficult challenges. You too can do the same. All that matters is setting your intentions and believing in yourself.
In the Long-Form module, if you will give it a bit of context (write a few lines) it should have the ability to complete your input in a storytelling form. We didn't try it, but other people have and it worked for them.does it have option for storytelling mate
