Yes, I think the same, not all the niches are igual, some can be spammed to death and others are more filtered by google's algorithm.
Did you buy backlinks for your site or for competitors - meaning google blocked competitors’ sites because of shitloads of bad backlinks?
I would prefer to keep the niche specific information private but the niche I spammed is very competitive and saturated. But still the spamming worked there because I have not done any SEO on it except spamming.

Thousands of copied content sites are doing pretty well! Just look at the news sites, all they do is copy article, give credit at bottom to original author and just change the headlines and still it works wonderful for them. I do not have specific tip because everyone works in different niche sites, so I am nobody to comment on that as it may harm your site. I personally suggest is make a copy of your main site on different domain and do an experiment with cheap PBN links, edu guest posts, edu and mix blog comments and little bit of spamming with RankerX, GSA or whatever software you prefer and see how it goes! You never know unless you try.
