Shared vs VPS

Correct me if I am wrong, all providers you mentioned provides Cloud hosting, so, VPS rates are high of them and all are crap hosting. Siteground or a2hositng, even Hostgator are some good choices.

After a long time here I am with an update.

First I tried doing everything by myself and it was exhausting because I am not familiar with Linux and commands. I tried to install VestaCP and there was one more free CP I found on YT with a tutorial on how to do it.

What I found was all these tutorials are incomplete, there is always something missing and it will not work fine at the end. A couple of times I was doing it from the beginning, writing the notes so I can share it here (in the case I make it work).

When I make it work, the emails didn't work properly. I wasn't receiving email notifications and I was not able to send email using Roundcube - I was getting some errors. Finding a solution/fix wasn't easy if you don't know anything about Linux so I gave up on that.

After a week I hired a guy on Fiverr saying he knows how to do it and I said everything I need to work and when he delivered the emails didn't work. He asked me more money (asking to order another gig) because that's a separate thing and he was saying that I didn't mention emails in the order which is wrong. After sending him a screenshot he gave me a refund without saying a word.

Now I found another guy, little bit slower dude and it took him about 10 days to make everything, but at the end, he installed me ISPConfig + PHPMyAdmin + RoundCube and all emails are working now - only it goes to spam but if I understand that's because my IP address is new. That's not the problem because I will be the one getting all these emails.

So yea, it wasn't easy and right now I am migrating my portfolio website there so I can compare the speed on shared vs VPS hosting.

P.S. If you don't know Linux it's better to hire someone.

Last time i used digital ocean, i had a problem with my site constantly running out of memory and crashing. Support couldn't help, and I had followed the guides to the letter. Even when i hired a linux expert to have a look, they couldn't tell why it was crashing, and it didn't have too many visitors or anything.

I prefer managed hosting with a cpanel, it might be a bit more expensive. But it saves much headache, at least for me.

All you needed was some swap memory.

It is a common problem with low end vpses, but it is easy to fix if your vps has ssd.

+1 for digital ocean. Been using them for 5 years almost. Never had a single issue. It's all about setting up properly.

It's easy to set it up properly when you are familiar with those things xD I think I will stay for now with Vultr and to see how it works.

Hi there,

I always liked using Namecheap shared hosting for my websites and client's websites and I bought their SSD in July last year. So in a few months, I'll need to renew it, it's not that expensive but also I am not getting that much from them related to the site speed.

I feel that the only thing I am getting from them is extra support. I mean all other provides are the same to me for the shared hosting option. I tried many of them and small things are different.

So in the last few days, I started thinking about buying a VPS and to host there my sites. My friend has a VPS and we tested the same site hosted at shared and there on VPS. My loading speed is 3.5s and his speed is 1. something, so less than 2s and it's amazing.

Why am I thinking then? My biggest concerns were:

• Am I going to be able to easily manage and install more than 1 WP site?
• How to do it?

Right now price does not question, if I can get for an extra $100 more than w/shared then I am in.

So I did a research on YouTube and found some answers and solutions:

1) I can manage and install more than 1 site on the VPS
2) I have two options, either to do it everything with a console or:

• Buy cPanel and Softoculus
• Use free CentOS cPanel

I am not going to sell hosting services so I can work manually with a console or to use free CentOS cPanel.

Providers I have in mind:

• Namecheap
• Vultr
• Digital Ocean

I would like to hear your opinions and if you have some tutorials about managing sites on VPS, commands, and so on. I found one YT video related to security and how to make your VPS more secure by using an SSH key.

Who said that getting VPS will lack the "additional support" , most hosting providers will offer their support in case of script issues like WordPress for free (if they are familiar with WordPress.. which is not necessary ).

What I will advise you is..

Get your VPS from Vultr (or DO), if only you will be using the server don't go for cPanel.. get Webuzo Panel Premium $3.00 mo (Webuzo Panel is developed by Softoculous !! and coming with all sexy cPanel features 1-click installs etc).

PS: If your website is CPU/RAM monster..of course you will need to pick the right plan which suits your CPU/RAM needs.

Small update over here

When I am spending money on Namecheap and Vultr why not spend more so I can test at least 3 different hosting providers and to see which one is better for me.

I run 3 tests for 3 different hostings with the same website on different domains - of. NameCheap, Vultr VPS, and A2 WordPress Hosting.

Please take a look at this image:

The price is not the point anymore, but the results and overall experience. I think that I will go with A2 Hosting right now.

Why A2 instead of Vultr VPS?

I will get there:

1. Support - for VPS I have to pay someone to fix server-side problems
2. Emails are working fine - VPS emails are going to spam (I guess it needs time to fix that, but I don't have time)
3. The price is almost the same
4. I am getting better results (maybe the server is not best configured)

Hope this will help others here that don't want to move on to VPS.

P.S. I would like to hear your comments/opinions.

Digital ocean works good for me, vultr as well. Didn't really used namecheap hosting but I heard it is not the fastest out there, although it is easy to setup so I see why would you use it

Do you know that vps need to be optimized right? Comparing vps vs web is stupid sorry to say.

Web hosting shared is optimized due to limit of resource usage, they optimize all and all is been optimized for that reason you have better results.

But when you receive more traffic you will see errors, downtimes and limits and maybe a account suspension for abuse usage.

You can't compare... there is two things differents.

Comparing web vs vps is like to compare Ferrari to Seat Ibiza. One is good and need to be optimized but other is more optimized and have better results and performance.

VPS needs to be optimized, nginx... mysql, php... compression.. also the cpu and ram available does the trick.

I know that and thank you for a comment and clarification. The only reason why I compared these hosting with VPS is that I knew my VPS is not configured properly and with those settings I wanted to see how fast it is.

The reason why am I still going to stick up w/web hostings instead of VPS is because it's a lot of easier for me now to manage my websites there.

Later on maybe I will be forced to move to VPS and to invest more money on configuration.
