A trick I use for local SEO is to find images that are already ranking for needed keywords in Google image search (as long as they're not unique to the site using them). Works well if you're running local lead gens.
For authority sites/blogs/etc I take a similar approach but am a little more careful with it.

I'm seeing original images being a ranking factor for review sites, not sure about other sites, but the more original everything the better in my opinion.

Its not bad to give credit to original photo owner. I do it always for my sites where i use photos taken by someone else, also i mention under which copyright act its covered as per my usage and as per the author allowance. Some allows Copyright 2.0 and some does 4.0 or other version.

You could always filter images free to be used for almost any purpose.

I have little to no worries about the copyright issues in my niche. However, the point here about using copied pics (even free ones) would have any bad impact in rankings?

No it wont. Free images are used by many big and small sites and none have seen negative or positive impact of such images. They won't give you the value that your unique image can give.

Mostly avoid using Copy write images. Its create an issues to the site.

The only issue you might probably have is if you are using images of people without their permission. For others, you shouldn't generally have any issues. If you want to be really really safe, then make sure to quote the source below the image.

For example, if you will use base64 formatting for images, then we can assume that Google has got a way to detect if this image was used somewhere before and it's not unique.
On the other hand, it's not so hard to parse other formats of the image as well, but I would argue if Google really does that as it would require a lot of resources to do that. I think they prefer to use that resources to sell them withing GCP.
