You´re NOT missing anything. Most of those services are crap and, there are some that are crap but it´s because they don´t manage their subscription properly and, the one who do, have many limitations in place in regards to the amount of keyword searchers and domains you can run daily there.

My advice is that, if you can afford $28 per month on THE BEST ALL AROUND SEO TOOL ON THE MARKET, then do it!

Take advantage of their $7 7 day trial promotion. You can create as many as you want but using a different email and you will have full access to Ahrefs without any downtime or crazy limitations. I am myself on my 3rd $7 trial period and the difference is huuuge.

Ahref is pretty good, in my opinion. Along with that you can even try using Keyword tool from mangools. I found that helpful, its able to fetch kw score and serp pretty fast
