Google is Warning about Comment Spamming | Must Read

If you look at the past few changes/updates google has made they have released the information before it happened (sandbox.google.com) Danny Sullivan wrote a massive post about the same subject a few weeks ago.

This is happening

They have done it with Directory links, forum links & social bookmarking so why would they not do it with comment spam.

Remember Google created Link Currency so they can devalue at any stage

But seriously though, for Google to start nailing sites just for comment links they are starting down a slippery slope. They might take out the worst offenders, and a few unlucky with the collateral damage but if you have a reasonably diverse link profile and use some common sense you won't set the link graph alarm bells ringing.

@SweetFunny & Yukinari84: I always find something new in your replies I've spam comment but never thought about using this direct traffic I just build backlinks to my link wheel, blog farms to gain more juice. Maybe I will try to convert these traffic! Thanks for the tips

Considering what we said above, it's useless to think of harming your competitor's ranking by spamming comments with their name, since it usually won't affect their ranking if their sites are complying with Google Webmaster Guidelines.

It seems clear that sites with actual value will not be affected at all, which means that if you _do_ have a quality site comment spamming will continue to be a valuable tool.

Where in the article did they say they'll penalize sites that spam comments for backlinks? They're warning sites, particularly blogs that allow such spams as it MAY or may not affect their ranking. So there is no way you can do this to your competitors to get them deindexed or penalized unless they themselves are allowing such spams in their site.

well... Let's say they check the comment backlink and surrounding text and look for patterns example they find the same comment posted 2000+ times 5000+ times etc on a sliding scale and then demote your ranking based on "considered spam" whicj is duplicate content posts. (This is all theoretical btw) Let's say they do all this... So then we just improve our comment posting tools to spin the surrounding content to be thousand of unique posts similar to existing article/ad spinners do now and voila much harder to prove comment is spam. Where there is a problem there is a solution. We will always find a way. If it's not that it's something else!

Personally i find the comment spam doesn't get me anywhere i tend to believe that google does actually realize which links come from comment spam i know you all disagree with me but that's my personal experience. Of course its possible that i am just not good enough at it

Google could easily scan for common markers of comment links, such as "submitted by" or "posted on" etc. However, it does not want to completely disregard comment links because they are in fact quite often useful. In a discussion, people will often link to real authority information sources, and disregarding all comments will hurt Google's ability to provide relevance, alebit only a little bit.

Google realises the folly of cutting off one of its own arms to stop comment spam, so I think it's trying to make the bot smart enough to tell a spam comment from a genuine comment. I don't believe they will succeed in this venture if we cover our tracks well.

If I spammed comment fields of third party sites, what should I do?

If you used this approach in the past and you want to solve this issue, you should have a look at your incoming links in Webmaster Tools. To do so, go to the Your site on the web section and click on Links to your site. If you see suspicious links coming from blogs or other platforms allowing comments, you should check these URLs. If you see a spammy link you created, try to delete it, else contact the webmaster to ask to remove the link.

The truth is that Google doesn't know how to fight with this spam so it published some crappy articles and hopes that sb will be afraid and stop spamming

So, it would be safe to say that Google has some way of scanning for the usual OBVIOUS comment spam like "Viagra" or "Pharmacy" but it becomes exponentially harder to detect not so obvious comments.

Then again, commenting on blogs using those obviously Spammy keywords would already get you deleted by the moderartor so I guess, indeed, not much has changed.

Google might be struggle to have the processing power to efficiently discover a spammed blog comment but they do still take into account the linking profile of the site that contains the link. A site with a metric fuck load of outbound links to random poor quality sites will not hold much power in pushing one of the linked to sites up the ranks. If Google notices that the linked to sites backlink profile is from a lot of these spammed sites than it can discount the worth of the site.

Google doesn't need to penalise sites, they just need to stop rewarding them for the spamming links. This puts a stop to being able to harm a competitor's site.

Also, a competitor's site (if white hat) probably has a more rewarding link profile anyway - Google might take this into account before penalising them. Maybe it only requires a handful of respectable sites to stop any form of penalty...something to think about.
