I definitely agree with buying from friends. I don't encourage using your friends to get things for free. But rather encourage their business and buy from them.
It's the only healthy way to help small businesses grow.
Although, the general culture is to make friends in order to get things for free or very cheap.
It's nothing wrong with getting a discount as long as you help their business, not help yourself.

I would add, my mindset has come around to thinking of buisness/SEO like dieting. Less short term loss for aesthetics reasons, but long term sustainable goals for a longer healthy life time.
I keep banging this video in to every How to sell thread. Know how humans think and you will know how to sell.
Prof Peterson is not a salesman but he knows how people think and why they buy or don't buy.
