many often report increase in traffic but no increase in ranking. how is this possible?
Maybe they got a snippet feature or something. Or started ranking for more keywords/higher for LSI keywords.

Don't post very often, more of a lurker.

Got a domain that is 18 years old, decent content probably the best in my niche. Noticed a few drops to a couple of rankings around 20th April but a lot more went up (we've always ranked failry well as most of my competitors are spam back link driven). Did a rank check last night and my site has well and truly tanked, think I've only 4 pages left in the top 50.

I ranked top ten for most of my keywords and no 1 for many but only got 2-3 in top ten. WTF

I'm in the same boat mate, had a 4-year-old tech blog, worked hard on it every day ensuring that only QUALITY content was published. Was ranking well for most of my keywords but two nights ago most of them have come off completely.

I don't understand how Google can do this to a completely legit whitehat website, literally ruined everything I have... I put so much time and effort into this

yes, I will never get used to it. This is such a sickmaker...

I'm just going to sit tight for a week or two and see what happens, it's kind of hard to do though as feel I should be doing something rather than waiting and watching. I've never been hit by any of Googles updates before argh!

Google does not give a flying f*** about whitehat. All it cares about now is paid traffic so they can coin more profit.
There policy about unique content is bullshit.
I searched for the term webhosting the other day, 17 results on a 10 result page, 7 of them were ads.

My website got a big drop in rankings on Tuesday, there was certainly an update that took place.

Is there anyone who can confirm that sites with affiliate links are affected?
I don't really think it's about affiliate links. I've 2 sites, both contain affiliate links on atleast 98% of the pages, but the newer site using woocommerce plug-in gained 35% increase in traffic while the older site using tablepress lost 46% in traffic.

So, I can't understand the logic that give a newer site with a handful of links more gain over one with more links even from very large websites.

As far as am concern, damm Google and do what you've to do. There's no general formula.

I think this update is related to age and backlinks.

My older sites with a large backlink profile are largely unaffected. A few changes here and there but traffic is stable.

My newer websites under 18 months with no link building are decimated. I'm seeing massive drops across the board for all of them.

All sites use the same theme, interlinking strategy, plugins etc.

Older Website with Backlinks over 3 years old:

I second this.

7 years old site with 250 RD. https://i.imgur.com/oE5q1B4.png Hit #1 on targeted keywords. No guest posts, no niche edit, no editorial links. Just PBN and high DR contextual links. 70% naked anchor text and 20% phrase match. Traffic is up.

And this is my one year old site with 20 RD https://i.imgur.com/b8jYx5k.png It's dance like crazy on page 1-2. It was stable on #1 before update. Again, just PBN and high DR contextual links. 90% naked anchor text. Traffic is stable.
