lets suppose you have a great business opportunity but no one uses it and your competitors flyers are all over the place.Even if they are offering nothing and stealing from people pockets.Still you don't stand a chance as your competitors are known.....until and unless you are known you are nothing.Simple!!! Well in my opinion there are 2 ways to reach destination
1. High quality content with little backlinks.
You will reach there fastly.
2. Medium or high quality content with no backlinks, you will reach your destination slowly and it will require more time and efforts like you have to put double amount of content. But once you reach to certain level growth will be superfast then first

As for Digital Marketing, I agree with you, but do not underestimate other promotion tools.
But you can rank crap, such as Lorem Ipsum.
I know Kyle and was with him in Milan a couple of months ago and he ranked 3 new sites that week, to prove his ranking method still works.
What this shows is yes you can rank for crap, if your onpage etc is spot on.
Will this type of content ever convert? Will it Hell.
You need great content to convert, buyers will stop reading if it's badly worded, badly presented or just generally crap.
