For my websites the common factor is the hosting, 3 websites that got penalized are under the same hosting, but of course separated
Were all your websites built using the same strategy? Onpage, offpage and other things?
Maybe affected sites have smth in common?
That can't be the reason...
My website got hit too and I'm sure we are not under the same hosting

This is so much easier to say than actually to figure out. For me it seems completely random. The websites were in different niches, had different themes, different backlinks, they were on a different hosting etc.
Even if I would see anything in common, would it mean anything? As long as no one has a clue whats going on? As long as Google keeps silence and not addressing this?
I think to run into wrong conclusions would be the worst thing to do now.
So far this looks like an algo penalty to me. No idea what it is about tho. Might be possible rankings will come back by end of this week.
Of course it would. That's the only way to figure things out.
You agreed that's not the manual penalty, but algo. Meaning you've done smth Google's algorithms didn't like..
And yeah, I know, that's not easy
I have two different website: same niche, different languages. One increase and one decreased. This is not logic :/

No, the only way to figure out is by listening to Google's statement (if any). Everything else are just assumptions...jumping into conclusions. Just the fact many other guys on here got this kinda penalty shows how random it is.
"Done something Google's algorithm didn't like" - There have been updates every single month so far. Sometimes bigger, sometimes smaller. Sometimes with announcement, something without any official statement. Good luck figuring out how they change their algo on a weekly basis.
Google keeps testing their algorithm. Its also ridiculous how they sometimes come up with an update and few months later roll it back, this also might be the reason they ever announce it.

It's just another dance connected with previous problems with crawling, indexing and re-indexing. I guess, that it will be back to normal in few upcoming days.
