I don't want to come off as an expert on Instagram or any other social media channel, but I recently started giving more time to social media and over a month, I've had some really good return from social media channels and insights that I'd love to share. I'll share what I found the key ingredient of Instagram to be:

Consistency.

Instagram loves a lot of things. You can use hashtags to perform better (a single hashtag improves your engagement by about 21-23%), you can actively like other pages, you can experiment innovatively with your stories and make them interactive, etc. But above all, I've found that if you post consistently, your followers increase steadily.

No matter how good your content is, if you're not consistent in posting that stuff, Instagram won't pay much attention to you. This is real and although I'm not saying it will be the same for everyone using Instagram, this is pretty much how things work.

Imagine a page that has a lot of good stuff and rich content to post. Now, if you steadily post content, your follower base will keep on rising. One day of inactivity, and you'll see a bunch of people unfollowing you. Remember two things:
  • Instagram is insanely active.
  • And at the same time, there are so many people on it to push your content to.
Instagram won't give you the people you need
So, what happens is this: there's a whole segment of Instagram users who want to follow you and see your content. But Instagram limits how many of those actually discover you.

If you keep posting consistently, Instagram will keep lifting the limit on how many people see your content. And if you suddenly stop posting, your follower count will go down depending on how many followers you have.
  • When I started this Instagram project and had 10-15 followers, I experimented with different posting schedules. No-post days penalized me with 2-3 follower reduction.
  • In a week, I had 115 followers. A no-post day penalized me with 10 followers leaving. Two no-post days were penalizing me by 20-30 followers. But after that, even 5 days of inactivity kept me at 90 or so followers. I didn't take any further risks.
  • In three weeks, my follower count was 1k and each no-post day was penalizing me with 50-80 unfollows. I didn't experiment two consecutive no-post days.
  • Right now, I've completed a month and have 1.5k followers, and I get penalized about 80-120 unfollows if I don't post for a whole day.
So, what's happening?
Instagram knows which people actively unfollow. Let's call them volatile users. These "disappear". They will go if you don't post often. Most of these take a look at the pages they're following on a daily basis. Person X might take a look at his/her list today, Person Y might take a look at his/her list the day after.

Instagram also supplies you with non-volatile users. If you stop posting altogether, there will be a huge chunk (like bullet point two: 90/115) that will be left there. It's the non-volatile userbase.

In principle, there should be more non-volatile users, but Instagram keeps a good balance (that must be depending on the niche/category, I think) and supplies volatile users as well as a bigger slice of non-volatile ones if your content is rich.

If you had 90% non-volatile users, your follower count won't decrease if you stop posting. But Instagram gives you an increasing number (maybe 1-5% at the beginning but quickly a good 20%) of volatile users so that you feel you should be posting more often or you'll lose something.

Cut the crap, how frequently should I post?
As I said, I'm no social media or Instagram expert, so don't take it literally. But here's how I feel.

The main mantra here is consistency. How?
  • I tried posting 2 posts per day for 5 days.
  • The next experiment was 10 posts per day.
  • I also tried a 20 per day for 3 days.
The results? Exactly the same.

Same unfollows, the same pattern of follower growth, and the same likes-to-follower ratio. Engagement started inflating after 10 days and remained consistent no matter how many posts I did. I just had to keep posting the same amount.

Post either two posts a day or 20 posts a day, but keep it consistent.

When should I post?
I tried smart auto-posting, scheduled posting at specific time intervals (12 PM, 12 AM, 3 PM, 6 PM, 9 PM are the best times according to Instagram stats), posting randomly, and posting all at once (like all 5 posts of the day within 2 hours and then no posts for the other 22 hours).

My finding? There was absolutely no difference regarding what time you choose to post.

So, the only distinction between a steadily increasing follower count and a decreasing one is keeping up the interval at which you post. Stay consistent and you'll be good to go.

Quality is taken for granted in this thread. I begin with "Imagine a page that has a lot of good stuff and rich content to post." Of course, without quality, you can hardly imagine to be successful on Instagram.

Consistency and Quality

You´ve given better advice on this single post than many self-proclaimed "experts" here that are even selling services on the marketplace.
Thanks for taking the time for writing this. Im actually working on growing my IG account from scratch so this is perfect for me. Cheers!

Yes, in my past interactions with social media experts, I was told change the graphic to a square for Instagram and a long rectangle for Facebook. Use hashtags for Instagram, etc. All the basic stuff. What actually works on Instagram is something you can only learn when you give it some time. And of course, the first thing you should feel like doing once you've learned something new is to share it because we're nothing without each other.

You don't think posting when instagram says your followers are most active isn't good? It might be different with personal pages but I've noticed better engagement following that schedule.

I was running a business page too. Your question is a bit unclear ... Do you mean you should post when Instagram says your followers are most active? Well, that makes a lot of sense. But in this thread, I've only outlined what I saw. This was a business account in the graphic design niche. My engagement was made up for even if I posted at wild times that made no sense. When you post when your followers are most active, you'll earn a lot of engagement right away. Also, as reported once somewhere, about 70-90% of the lifetime engagement a post has is received within the first 5-10 minutes of posting. But somehow, IG compensated me later and I was left with the same ratios.

Yeah that what I meant .

Although I did notice a few shout-out pages who have random crap engagement ,then have that one post that gets 1-6k likes.

Maby it's different with art and shout-outs compared to personals? When my clients post at night , it's always crap and they never listen.

Those singular posts that get a spike is still a mysterious phenomenon to me. None of my posts in the entire month got any abnormal surge of engagement. But then again, telling us how these surges happen might as well be equal to telling their entire algorithm.

I prefer a little bit of mystery. It's like a challenge to break a system down that runs sophisticated algorithms to decide how content is fed to the users.

I know you have taken the time to post your thoughts and may believe them , but from personal experience i have to say that is " pung wash". I have been an active poster without beautiful content using hasttags, giving credit to the right people.. A model poster and Instagram still deactivated my account and still makes it considerably difficult for me . Now i no longer have the account which i spent months building

If you were doing everything right then why were you deactivated? IG account suspensions don't happen without a reason.

I recieved this only. So you tell me?! Since you are busy singing their praises.

I have been in contact to find out why and Instagram has NOT told me . They only request to have my personal photo

Whoa, mate, there is no need to target me by saying "You say why this happened since you sing their praises". I am merely outlining my experience. I am not an expert on Instagram marketing. I make those points very clear. I am not propagating the use of IG in any way. And I am 100% sure a lot of people agree with IG being rewarding if your content is rich and you're consistent. If you somehow believe that IG is absolute garbage and they ban people for no reason and that they have no system, then I must tell you that you're wrong, as simple as that. There is no way I could answer why your account was banned, and I'm sorry that happened. That is all I have to say.

Your (and i say again) " singing their praises" comment is total garbage to someone who is suffering the consequence of instagrams staffs inconsiderate actions. And i am telling it like it is. It appears to me you have not done your research. If you did you would see on Sitejabber reviews, search engines and other sites that Instagram is the worst social media when it comes to their service -Twitter coming a close second.

Millions of people have commented how instagram has unjustifably shut down their accounts without reason. A lot of these account holders have 13k or more followers and whose livelyhoods /incomes depends on their page. I was merely a small -none profit making page with a very small following of 43 . My page was an artistic photomanipulation page which paid humage to artists of interest to me . All pictures that was featured , i made sure the original creator was credited or permission was given . There was no reason - no justification to why my page was deactivated. It appears to me that Instagram was pressured into obtaining a personal photo of me so they can sell it to the individual/s (celebrity) that has requested it and made out like that they had justification to deactivate my account. May page did not contain a personal picture by yet the email recieved requested a picture even though my page was an artistic one. They claimed this was the only way they could verify the account belonged to a real person. Which was a load of nonsense. There is no way of verifying this if a personal picture had not been featured on the page. I recently was on Youtube and a woman who had her account back specifically outlined that if page created only features art and no personal picture, the chances are you will not get your account back. My thoughts exactly!. So why is instagram staff lying to people in hopes to fraudulently obtaining their personal photo? Answer- Money!

As soon as i was unable to access my account i contacted instagram who could not and would not provide me with a reason as to why my account was deactivate - despite several requests made to them to address. Instead i recieved two emails requesting my photograph and advising that my case will not be dealt with until i respond to their email with it attached. Is this the " amazing" Instagram you declare them to be? Is this the customer focus " We pride our customers and do everything possible to assist them" Instagram you refer to?

I responded to the email posing the question as to why my account was deactivated -again. I advised them i was only too happy to co-operate but i am concerned that the deactivation may occure again moving forward as the reason had not been addressed . I pointed out If there was anything i did specifically which they consider is a breach of their rules , than i would more than happy put it right. But how can i do so if i do not know what it is?

Instagram then sent a follow up email saying "They will not be dealing with my concern and i will no longer have access to my account" . They have seize all communication. I I tried emailing them again on 7 more occasions and they ingored everyone. I tried logging a fresh form and my email address was blocked by them .Still a great social platform ? o_O

Maybe you should do more of your research before you question other peoples motives. I had no axe to grind with instagram - my comment is not made out of malice, but true honest experience.

I spend several months creating the page which i am proud of and adore. It was something i looked forward to creating and sharing with others when work life becomes stressful. It was very theropertic to me and now its all gone. I had met a lot of people who shared the similar interest . All of which i have no means to contact because of this callous , thoughtless, heartless action of instagrams staff.

If you are such a fan maybe you contact them and give them a few pointers on how to stop being a " data hungry" monsters and start having compassion and REASONABLE judgement of their customers. Instagram is about making as much money as they can out of peoples data and if you do not have anything they can sell ( ie your personal information, including personal photos) then your page is taken down

That is all it comes down too. Instagram and Twitter is not what they use to be and it is all about how much they can make by invading peoples privacy to its ultimate and it is extremely sad
