im am planning on starting a review site. Not planning on selling anything directly but rather just writing reviews with affiliate links in them. So my question is it necessary for me to have SSL certificate? Thanks in advance.

You don't really need it because you probably won't use accounts to log your visitors.

But, because G and other search engines see it as a security factor, it adds to your overall website score.

And as pointed above, it's free with Let's encrypt, so it doesn't cost anything to get some domain points

yes, it really is.
many browser show a message saying ( this website is not safe) message when redirecting to an ht tp site along with a button that says ( return to safety) the if clicked the window is closed.
even if you are not selling anything directly you absolutely have to get an ssl certificate
your conversions will improve drastically

Starting from 2018, it is almost a requirement to have an SSL that most major hosting providers will give the basic one to you for free. Used to cost me $99 to get an SSL cert.

Second Firefox (at least on developer version) pops up a small overlay on sites without an SSL cert, so it's probably best to start with one. And it's free from multiple sources, Cloudflare, Cpanel, Letsencrypt. so why not take 5 min to start with one

I suggest you start with it. as links indexed will take time to change and won't be a hassle later.

I believe Google Chrome is now showing all non-ssl sites as "not secured", so it's not good for your visitor to see such message

Beside, you have a nice greeny color on your url and it's pretty much free to get ssl nowadays

Letsencrypt, cPanel autossl and there is many other individual sites that can offer you free SSL now.. why not as it would be free and it would be more secure experience for your visitors
