Whatsapp will Start Running Ads in 2019

Hey guys,

WhatsApp will Start Running Ads in 2019 on WhatsApp Status. I am wondering about the potentials not only for the big companies but for people like us. WhatsApp has 1,5 billion users and about 50 Million Users in Germany. About 90% of them are between 14 - 60.

I am thinking about potential in terms of locations. For example even if you do not live in Berlin or at universities you will start a campaign there (with many users) to advertise your dropshipping store.

Just one example but I have about a billion in my head the only problem is they did not release any price lists yet and I dont know how easy it will be to set up a campaign.

What are your thoughts?
Do you think WhatsApp adds could be better then for example Instagram?
Do you think people will switch to a different messenger and its not a good idea?

I think it has great potential for the advertisers if the price is competitive. Yes, some users will shift (telegram?), but it shouldn't really affect the userbase much; given that the ads do not do anything drastic in the app ui. All in all, fingers crossed.

...Or you can be sneaky, create a mobile app to stop WhatsApp Ads on the phone and advertise it with "Tired of seeing WhatsApp Ads? Us too."

Hope they don't do ads like early messaging apps used to do. Those ads were weirdly bad.

I agree with you but I feel like there is a huge userbase that is just too lazy to switch and compared to instagram you have a much higher varierty of age groups which gives more potential. I guess a lot of people didnt even read that news. In the begining I am hoping to make some profit

No one will move, what's app is a brand, even if It sucks, people are going to stay there (and also because they are too lazy and not enough smart)

Many people from India had updated to a smartphone and WhatsApp very recently in the last couple of years. And, they are still learning to use WhatsApp. So, they don't even know why the ads are displayed. But, I think it will not affect the usage of WhatsApp in India, at least in 2019.

Nobody will move to other apps. Everyone has whatsapp in Germany - everyone communicates via WhatsApp not SMS. If your entire friends & family use WhatsApp, you don’t just say I’ll switch to another platform, since not all of your friends are active/downloaded those messaging apps

As far as I understood users must agree to a new PrivacyPolicy to recieve adds. No one will do it at first but WhatsApp already introduced a business client where people can connect with companies (e.g. Singapore Airlines). If you want to use that service you have to agree to the new PrivacyPolicy. I guess thats the trick on how they will try to make users accept these new policys. The average BHW user will spot and decline it but I am sure a huge amout of people will just agree.

If they are smart enough they will put in smth in their Policy where they can legally connect WhatsApp & Facebook and then you have all the targeting data you want (and hopefully cheaper then the adds on facebook).

Again these are just my 2cents but I am excited to see where this is going.

It may be an exciting news for advertisers, but many users won't be happy about this. I've moved to Telegram months ago even though I'm still using Whatsapp for a few contacts. I'll try to promote Telegram by myself and be sure that nobody I know uses this shitty application anymore.

It simply isn’t sustainable or cost-effective to run a business that doesn’t make money.

It’s like you ranking a niche site but not putting and affiliate links on it. It’s just a waste of time really.
