I wanted to share a method I personally use to find expired domains easily using a combination of Ahrefs and ScrapeBox. Both tools are mandatory for this method to work.

I created a video tutorial for it since I think that's easier for people to follow - see at the end of this post.

The process is relatively straightforward. We decide on an authority website with a lot of content that we'd like to search for expired domains on.

Afterward, we export all broken links from Ahrefs and filter and trim them using ScrapeBox. Once done, we check whether the domains are registered or not using ScrapeBox.

We input the expired domains into the batch analysis tools on Ahrefs to check their stats and discover their value and backlink profiles.

If you have any questions in regards to the method, please post a comment below, and I will try to answer your query swiftly.

Video can be found here

Enjoy people!:)

FAQ
Q: When you run through your links, what would be the threshold of a domain to acquire. When a score is 10+? 20+? Grab any 30+?

To be honest, there shouldn't be a threshold like that at all. You'll have to do manual research on every single domain that looks interesting. Using the batch analysis is just a quick way to sort the good from the bad.

Thing is, lots of expired domains have been spammed by previous users, so you'll have to check each domain manually. Usually I wouldn't bother looking at domains with less than 20 referring domains.

I could talk for days about how to manually select a domain but in the end it's also a subjective matter.

Here are a few things that can help you get started:

  • Check the website on archive.org - if you see japanese content anywhere, XXX stuff or complete change in domain niche it's spam)

  • Check the whois history - how many times was a domain dropped? Owner changes? Country/language changes?

  • Check TF and CF of the domains to see if they hold topic value.

  • Check the anchors and backlinks in Ahrefs - anything unnatural or irrelevant to the domain? (if you have payday loan anchor backlinks on a expired domain about history, it's most likely spammed)

  • Crazy amount of referring domains but low Ahrefs Domain Score? Most likely the Ahrefs algo has detected spam
Stuff like SpamZilla can help you go through domain lists and determine spam quicker, but in the end you need a human pair of eyes to give the verdict.

To sum up, I've seen domains with 5 Domain Rating on Ahrefs being super strong and domains with 35 being useless. Keep in mind, it's a 3rd party metric so you can rely on it blindly.

Been shared before but this video.
Yeah, not saying I invented the method. It's straightforward and should get people going. Great method for beginners to grasp the world of expired domains.

You don't need scrape box for this method.
It's the foundation of this method. Sure there may be alternatives. Feel free to share what you'd use instead. I'm sure it'll be helpful for others.

Nice share mate. Then you just need to spam check all the domains as well ;)

Exactly. There's a variety of different ways to do that. I'll have a video out for that in the near future as well.
