Every keyword tool has it's own algorithm to discover the difficulty of a keyword. So use KWFinder or SemRush instead as it gives better results.

I use Ahref, you’ll need to check competitors backlink by yourself, dont trust KD stat too much.

Yes, the tools (KWFinder, SEMRush, Ahrefs, etc.) are helpful. But no tool is 100% accurate.
You need to use manual analysis and own judgment for competition.

1. Manually analyze top 5 guys.
2. Imagine you are to mimic what they have and make it slightly better.

How does it make you feel?

Very Joyful = Very easy competition
Joyful = Easy competition
Neutral = Medium competition
Nauseous = Hard competition
Strong Headache = Very hard competition
Pass out = TABU competition (forex, garcinia cambgoia etc.)

The best free one is to use Google's Keyword Planner and to check some things manually. Other paid tools that you can use include KWfinder, Market Samurai, Longtail Pro, Ahrefs and a few more.
