Go to the local police and explain them what happened. Make them lodge an report against the person in question. This advice might sound silly, but this is the only way you can keep your ass cleaned from this case. Even if paypal does something in future ( which is unlikely because your are from Philippines ), you will have this report in your defense.
This is a very serious crime you have been victim of and it has to be dealt seriously. Asking for help in an online forum wouldn't help much imho. I have been victim of a scam (tech support scam) my self in past ( but that was like $1000, not $5000) and I went to the police immediately and explained them everything in details. Even showed them all the proofs I had in my defense. That did help and the guys stopped harassing me ( but it wasn't paypal who were after me. Paypal was just the payment processor in my case... and that's a different story lol).
I know that the report itself won't be of much help but he does not have too many ways does he? If police really does investigate the case they can definitely trace the person. That will only be possible if OP decides to go to the police.. lol.I'm afraid going to police wouldn't do much good for OP. The report itself wouldn't be much of a defense in court. The evidence if they manage to collect and present it properly will be overwhelmingly pointing to OP being behind the whole thing and interpreted as possible attempt to cover by filling a report. If anything it may make it easier for claimants to locate OP.
My job is to receive payments from my "employer" company's clients on my PayPal account, withdraw the money to my bank account and forward it to them via Western Union.

Yepp that is one problem he has, along with several other problems. I feel sorry for him but he did act pretty dumb. Even if they did not scam him, he could have possibly been summoned by the tax department too. That's a dumb way to earn money.Problem is once he files the report they are obligated to investigate, but since they won't be able to trace anyone (if the scammer is worth half his salt) and also tracing internationally is not in their competence anyway, they will be forced to turn their attention on OP and possibly initiate court case via alerting state prosecutor.
I Fell victim to a scam like this Recently too. Guy was Here on blackhatworld saying how he needed a paypal cause it was banned in his country and he'd pay 20%. He Had me sending invoices for $1,000's of dollars but it was immediately fishy so I only sent one and cancelled the rest and sure enough it got charge backed.
I'm negative $1,000, I called paypal right away and told them what happened and they said they'd contact their head office about the situation. I havent heard back from Paypal since and its been months but my account is still in the negative.
I detatched my banking info / credit cards and swapped out my adress. I Read somewhere that since they don't have your SIN they can't actually hurt your credit score. If they do end up calling me and comming after me for the money I'll just tell them I got scammed. I have family in the local police department I've already told.
$5,000 however might be another story. However since you are in the Phillipene's I doubt they'll come after you.
What do they charge? 3.4%?
So for Paypal to earn $5900 in fees (that they'll hhave to swallow if this dude doesn't pay), they'd need to process $173,500 worth of transactions.
Do you really think they're going to let that slide?
They have an army of lawyers they're already paying.
The OP is toast if he doesn't cough up.
I'm sure there are hundreds if not thousands of worse off people who got scammed in the tens of thousands that they go after. $173,500 is a drop in the ocean buddy, Paypal processes 131 BILLION each year. https://www.statista.com/statistics/277841/paypals-total-payment-volume/
It would cost paypal more in Lawyer fee's to go after this guy lets be real.
They aren't gonna do shit but get some useless debt collection agency to try and trick you into paying off your balance.
$5900 will come of their bottom line, take all of the costs into account and you'll be able to at least triple that figure to well over $500K in transactions.
They aren't going to just write that off, someone will need to pay.
At 131 billion, thats only 262K transactions of that value (500k)
