Hello everyone.

I have recently bought a domain through namecheap which I will use as a blog with the monetization primarily being affiliate marketing. I've heard a lot about how Google prefers secure sites that use a SSL certificate over non-secure sites. I did a bit of research and I'm now a little confused on which provider I should use. I've just recently learned about SSL certificates so I'm a bit of a newbie on that part.

My domain was purchased through Namecheap where I also have my hosting. And since I got my hosting account through Namecheap they are offering "a free 1-year PostiveSSL for the primary domain of a new hosting account, and addon domains." After that 1 year they will charge around $9 per year for this.

So my question is. Should I go with the obvious choice to use Namecheap's PostiveSSL solution?

OR should I use something like CloudFlare or LetsEncrypt which as far as I understand offers free SSL but maybe slows your site down a bit since it's from a third-party instead of directly from your hosting provider?

Positive SSL costs $ 2.88 per year and $ 3.88 per year (if you purchase for on year only) from "https://www.ssls.com". The have have the same service as NameCheap does. In fact they have same reseller license as Namecheap resellers do. As they are a part of the Namecheap Group.

There are free solutions to many things in world and like free hosting. But the thing is that if you are trying to compete with others and earn money from something then it is your business. You cannot expect to win the competition and build a brand with free stuff. That is why we have paid solutions which seperates brands a class apart from the ones that are not brands.

So, please do not go for the free solutions specially not for security solutions. I hope it helped.

Do I even need SSL on my niche and review sites? The only page on there I can imagine that needs them is the contact page. Also is there any evidence that having this improves ranking?

If you want to be a trusted brand, yes you do need that. Most importantly it provides security assurance to your visitors. And I believe others in your niche are providing that security to their visitors. You cannot expect to win the competition if you aren't providing more value than your competitor is doing. Most importantly the cheapest SSL it is dirt cheap from https://www.ssls.com

Comodo and GoDaddy are both fine low-end options. Keeping in mind that half the point of an SSL is having a badge that people recognize and trust.
