How many interests to test? fb ads

Hello,

I'm going to start a new shopify store, and I have some questions regarding testing products.
PS: I already tried ecommerce once with a friend and failed, but I want to try again and hopefully keep trying until I succeed.

My budget this time is $1k for ads, and this is what I think I will do to test products:
- I can only test one product at a time, if it works good, if not I move to another one.
- Create 5 to 7 adsets for the product at $5 per day each. All adsets for one country (mostly USA).
- Each adset will only have 1 interest.
- Let the ads run mostly for 3 days (maybe I can kill some adsets if they show nothing in first 2 days? like no likes no comments no engagement at all?)
- I'm thinking about doing WC this time not PPE. (Is that good to start with?)


What do you guys think about this?
Should I do more adsets or less? & Is it always necessary to let the ads run for 3 days or more, or I can kill the really bad ones after like 1 and a half day or something?
Should I look more into video ads or image based ads work just fine? (because I heard that fb can close your account for copyright issues if you use videos)


Please let me know what you think and if you have any tips for me, any help is highly appreciated. Thank you

Make sure you setup your pixel before you start any ads so you can retarget your website traffic audience later on and also track their actions on your website. By WC you mean website clicks i assume or website conversions? I recommend starting out with website clicks then later on create custom conversions campaigns to retarget your website traffic with a conversion such as AddToCart or something similar. As long as you're getting a good CTR and low CPC then you should leave the campaign running regardless of engagement. Not everyone who sees your ad is going to have time to comment, like , click and buy your product. Unless you want engagement, dont worry about it too much, it should come naturally. Also, look at the total number of clicks (not link clicks) , this shows engagement in a different form i.e not comments/likes but theyre still clicking on the ad image etc to check it out.

I will definitely setup the pixel and also learn more about it to understand it well. I did mean Website Conversions, like view content at first and then move to add to cart.. have you tried this or you always work with website clicks first and found good results that way?
Yes I totally agree that not all people should like/comment or anything, it just gives a better idea about the audience you are targetting if you see likes/comments.. but I will keep what you said in mind while testing, this is very useful for me Thanks again.
One last question.. Which way did you find good results with in regard of targetting, do you use 1 interest per adset or narrow audiences?

I only do website clicks and conversions unless I'm doing video ads or trying to achieve a different objective. I keep 1 interest and use 1 country per ad set so the audience doesnt get too big. If you can reach a couple thousand people a day with the interest & bid you should be ok.

@void957 what do you mean by different objective when using video ads? maybe using them for getting engagement on the post rather than website clicks & conversions? (I just heard that video ads are better but I never tried and would like to hear about your experience with them if you don't mind

Sometimes it's hard to find the right audience size with only 1 interest (like some interests you may want to try only have like 10k/50k audience something) How do you deal with that? Do you usually add more interests until you reach a normal audience size.. like 300k/500k which I hear is good to work with.

Start off with clicks etc do video ads later. As long as you can get around 100-200 clicks a day (or however many you need) from the audience size, then it's fine.

You can target multiple interests as long as they're somewhat similar. I also do flex targeting to target broad interests and then flex with something more specific to get more targeted.

I did try flex targetting many times in my first attempt (but with a little budget though only lost around $350).
I was just confused since I hear some say it's better to use only 1 interest per adset and put $5/day for it and let it run for 3 days. But it sounds a bit hard to do & many times 1 interest doesn't give you a proper audience size (a lot of time less than 100k - and people say it's always good to stay in 300k/500k range)

I also watched a course (from James Beattieà and saw that he adds many interests for each adset... And usually uses many interests in one adset for example: Targetting "Phone case websites" for a case product...

So on your experience, which worked for you best?

I haven't tried single interest targeting yet so I can't comment on that. I've used flex targeting and it has helped me since my niche is broad and I need to be more targeted to reach the right people. If a single interest is too small, try combining multiple similar interests together. For example, if you're in the pets niche, combine interests that are related to magazines for pets.

For large/broad interests, I would suggest flex targeting or try finding a more targeted single interest with a good potential reach.

Thank you for starting this thread. I am in the exact same boat with my first store. I think my targeting is too broad. How do you narrow your interest down?

My potential reach is constant +100M that's why I think i am not getting anywhere.

Also, did you start with Website conversion ads with View Content as the objective? How are those performing for you?

Hi,

I think +100M is too broad, from all the videos or articles I saw they always say you should start with an audiance around 300k/500k, and after that when your store gets more view content then you can try 1.5M audiences and so on.

I'm only starting out as well and I only do < 500k in audience, and I tried PPE ads as well as some WC View Content. I can't really help you out since I'm also a beginner and haven't tried many adsets yet.

All I can say is that you should try and make your audience around 500k at the start. Good luck
