thx gyessAvast Free Antivirus - it's working well for me.
i prefer default windows defender
I'm not using any antivirus either
don't use free AV
Use eset nod 32 and preregister each 2-3-4 weeks
from here or different websites which update their database
nod325.com
Malwarebytes is great is you don't mind paying for the full version. Considering you said free in your title then i would recommend Avast its pretty lightweight for what it does so won't be too damaging to your pc.
Some people wear by AVG and it is a good starter virus scanner I agree, but avast is also good...
Check out this site, they do freebies and discounted products.
Here's a current freebie;
I am NOT connected with them!
Just use Windows Defender, it really works like an other anti-virus software and doesn't take much CPU to run.

yes you are right security is importantThere are free AVs out there, but often you'll find that paid ones are better like paid stuff in many cases is better than their free counterparts.
Personally i use ESET NOD32 since ages (since 2000 i think). It costs $50/year. I guess your security should worth that much, but if you don't fancy paying, without risking your machine with installing hacks, you can always find working serial codes, which can be used for a long time. I've never had a (serious) infection since then, which would require me to reinstall the system. Of course you'll get the occasional adwares, but those can be removed easily with Malwarebytes, if you do a full system scan in every other month.
I don't really have an extensive knowledge about free AVs, but i would not recommend AVG free. It was installed on all of the machines at my last work place (except mine, i used NOD32 there too) and i needed to reinstall the system on those machines in every few month, because there were one or more nasty infections i wasn't able to get rid of completely otherwise.
My colleagues wasn't too aware of cyber security, let's just say that AVG free is not complete garbage, but if you're technically inclined, you should not use it, because it won't be able to prevent infections, if you're clicking on the wrong places.
The first layer of the antivirus system is you.
