AVG would be a good free one. But if you have a couple of bucks, you can in fact shop for a license via eBay - there are resellers selling $4-5 bucks for a license that lasts a year, which I think is a pretty good deal!

use Windows Defender and do not waste your time 
I like ESET Smart Security and Malwarebytes Premium. If not you can just use the default Windows Defender. Should be sufficient for most. I quote internet users "common sense is the best antivirus". Don't visit Malicious sites and download stuff from there. No antivirus can save your computer. Or you can source the internet for cheap antiviruses. I have tried some and it is really genuine.

I dunno... I find that AVG and AVAST just don't respect my exclusions properly. Those are the two most widely used free options. Most of the time I spent within the interface of antivirus programs is spent getting shit out of quarantine and adding exclusions for my bots and what have you, hoping it will let me do my work. So for now, I just avoid clicking on things I should not be clicking on, and run cracked apps from dubious sites withing a VM. I let Windows Defender run as well. Works for me.
