I stumbled across this site and in particular this post. I have now read through the entire mammoth thread.
It is both epic and massively informative. I registered just to thank the OP and pretty much thumbs up to everyone who contributed over the past 4 years!
Kindle market has evolved somewhat over that time but the core principals that are still relevant have been covered and repeated in many posts over the period. Anyone picking up this thread now REALLY must read it through - well worth it!

ok...I have been tracking some extremely short books for the past 2 weeks, around 20 - 40 pages in length with shitty book cover, two lines of description, and for the content, I was able to see one para in the preview which was clearly written by a non native speaker. But am shocked that they are ranking above 10000 in kindle store!!!! I tried to see if the page has any backlinks or traffic from other sources but could not find out. I had also posted some books in the same niche but those rank in 200000 to 900000 range. Now can some kindle guru shed some light on this trick or how they were able to achieve this amazing ranking for books with no exceptional content? Now I have tried to research some techniques - fake reviews, ads etc but some books dont even have reviews!

I usually research non fiction, but am confident that I will find such example in fiction category as well. I found some examples like this a few months back in the travel photographs category where people created a slideshow of "tourist places" or "top 20 volcanoes" or waterfalls, etc. Some of those ranked in top 10000 for a few weeks and then dropped and never came back.

I wonder myself what the authors are doing. The thing is sometimes someone might be selling a course or something about a black hat technique and then you find a bunch of people publishing books based on what the course told the to do. It was not so long ago people were publishing non-fiction books with a bunch of titles that made absolutely no sense. The titles were simply rich in keywords.

Kindle is good,very profitable , I'm a part time Ghost writer and can produce 20000 word romance and suspense books for 100$ , I decided to write for myself ,but I'm not really good at promotion and management it is not really my field and have had little success ,that is why I have entered the Ghost writing field

I am on page 5 when searching for a very popular Erotic book Trilogy phrase on Amazon and getting zero sales either Kindle or Paperback. I made a book trilogy.
How does that work?
Its because I am an unkown author right?

Throw out a few ads on Amazon targeting the book trilogy's keywords. Then you'll start showing up on first page soon. All you need is like $50 in ads to give you a start. Also, offering your book as free for a while is a good thing to do (ebook version) so that you can get some reviews on it which will naturally boost your rankings even further. Nobody wants to buy a book with no reviews.
(or, since we are on Blackhatworld, hire someone to put a bunch of fake reviews on your Amazon book (all w/o getting flagged)). This will jumpstart your sales.

Run a big free book campaign. The more downloads you will get, the better your book will rank afterwards. that's because amazon will see that your book converts well and they will start to promote it.
Would not recommend fake book reviews. amazon does a great job in finding & deleting them. also, your book/ author account might get penalized/ closed.
