    From Youtube Help:

"Previously, the YouTube algorithm suggested videos (whether related videos on the watch page or recommended videos elsewhere on the site) based on how many people clicked to watch a video. This was a helpful way to promote channels, but issues like misleading thumbnails kept this system from bringing videos with deeper engagement to the top. After March 14th 2012, the algorithm for suggesting videos are based on which videos contribute to a longer overall viewing session rather than how many clicks an individual video receives."

Just thought that this would be relevant to mention also here as some (=many) might be unaware.

I guess it remains to be seen what impact does this have on view counts.

My guess is that it's a percentage, at least for short videos. Or maybe need to reach end of video.

For example, what if your videos are 30 seconds long - they never register a view? Obviously this isn't true.

I've been testing this out with several different methods and it sure SEEMS like in order for MY videos to be credited with an actual view MOST OF THE TIME, at least half of the video needs to be watched. When testing this way, I've seen about 75% to 85% of the views eventually credited within 48 hours.

When I increase view length to 75% of video length, it seems to give me a slightly higher percentage -- up to around 90% but no more.

Just my own tests so your mileage may vary.

It depends on the individual length of a given video.

But won't longer videos are difficult to rank? ( That's being said in a few youtube courses & sites? )

It seems that a 7:00 minutes video that got viewed 1:30 minutes will rank better than a 1:20 minute video that got viewed till the end.

Mind you, these are just speculations I read in the official Google partner forum, but it seems it's a fact that from the 14th March longer videos has taken a lot more spots in the related sections damaging the shorter videos creators.

what is considered a short video? I'm asking because of the popularity of music videos on YouTube. Most them are only 3 minutes long.
