Even with the best security and settings, most hacks happen because of exploits in random plugins. So keeping plugin use to a minimum when possible is my motto. (And subscribe to all those disclosure emails from places like wordfence)
I don't use Wordfence / Sucuri because they're too complicated for me, but these 2 are pretty popular... Also Cloudflare...
And also I have bookmarked this thing for some reason (I remember a few months ago a forum member has had bad hacking issue with his Wordpress site and someone had recommended this thing which apparently does wonders for the security of your site): https://perishablepress.com/8g-firewall/
