How do you figure out your competitors' SEO strategy?

How they do linkbuilding, how they market, whether they do a linkwheel or what?

How do you figure out what other people are doing that is successful?
What tools do you use and how do you use them?

SEO Spyglass does that.

Yahoo Site Explorer as well.

I don't think either will go into as much detail as you are looking for. Specifically the layout of their links or their full marketing process. But they should give you a decent idea of what you are up against.

How do you figure out your competitors' SEO strategy?

Its very easy to spot if a competitor is working on his onsite and offsite seo.

Just take a look at simple onsite seo work, like the use of title, h1 tags and photos. If photos aren't optimized then is it most likely that they don't take onsite seo serious.

Offsite seo is checked by the amount of links and the anchor text of those links.

I use a tool called ‘Keyword Country' to know my competitors' keywords, ads and landing pages and compare it with mine. I get alerts when they change their SEO strategy. It works for me :)

It seems like backlink analysis only shows you basic SEO.

What about if the person is building a link wheel or a link silo or a more complicated structure? How do you know?

You just follow a random link, that looks like a web 2.0 properties and then look into the backlinks for the particular tier.

But use your time wisely. Spending hours on tracking down the whole pattern for a competitors linknetwork, does not create any value for your site!

The most important thing, is just to get a quick overview:
How many links?
What kind of links?
The quality of links?
Does it looks like your competitor use a lot of time on his/her SEO work?

And then make a linkstrategy for your own site and take action. Don't spend to much time, wondering why your competitor rank better than you. Use your time on your own onsite and offsite SEO.
